Andy Murray has been retired from professional tennis for over a year, but still keeps a close eye on the sport.

Murray, in attendance for the Laver Cup this weekend, called it a day on his legendary career after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The three-time major champion had spent the latter stages of his career blighted by injuries and decided to play his last match of his career representing Great Britain.

Since Murray’s retirement, the ATP Tour has been dominated by Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Dubbed the ‘new two’, Sinner and Alcaraz have won 10 of the last 12 Grand Slam titles between them and have alternated as the world number one.

Andy Murray gives his verdict on the state of the ATP Tour today

The games of the Spaniard, and particularly the Italian, have set the tone for a new style of tennis, which Murray admitted he is not the biggest fan of.

Speaking in an interview with Tennis Channel, Murray said: “I just feel like now, with a lot of the players, it has become a very power-based game: lots of big serving, huge groundstrokes, and the players are moving very well across all of the surfaces. I think maybe grass is still the one that some players struggle a little bit with the movement on, but players are moving really well.

How many Grand Slams would ‘prime’ Andy Murray win in 2026?

Where would he be ranked?

“And yeah, there’s not much variety in surfaces, but because of that, there’s less variety in playing styles as well. And that’s something that I really enjoy watching myself. That’s why I like watching Learner Tien because he’s got a slightly different game style. That’s why I love watching Alcaraz, because he’s got all of the shots, and he tries to use them as well.

“So yeah, it’s become a little bit too power-based for my liking, but there are still some great examples in there of the types of tennis that I like to watch.”

Murray has had the chance to watch both Learner Tien and Alcaraz at the Laver Cup, with the two stars representing Team World and Team Europe, respectively.

Andy Murray’s record against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Though he was not the player he once was when their careers crossed paths, Murray played both Sinner and Alcaraz on the ATP Tour. Murray’s first clash with Sinner came at the Stockholm Open back in 2021.

The Scot won in straight sets there, but Sinner earned revenge at the Dubai Tennis Championships a year later by winning their second and last clash. They were scheduled to face off in the fourth round of the 2023 Canadian Open, but Murray withdrew.

Murray has also had two tour-level meetings with Alcaraz, the first of which came at the Indian Wells Open in 2021. Murray won that battle, but Alcaraz levelled the head-to-head score by beating him in Vienna later that season.
