Earlier today, we finally got our first good look at Avengers Doomsday, giving us a dodgy Doctor Doom, lots of fighting, and more superheroes and villains that you can shake a stick at. It’s pretty exciting if you’re a Marvel fan, and you’d assume that there’s absolutely nothing that Disney could do to dampen any of that hype, right?
Well, in comes generative AI to ruin the party once again, as quite a few fans are looking at the official poster for the movie with suspicion.
Marvel Think Disney Has Been Using AI Again
In case you missed it, you can see the poster above. It features Doctor Doom standing hunched over in front of a large tapestry, which features several angles floating around a woman and child. Those are presumably Doctor Doom’s dead wife and child, though that’s just a theory that’s been floating around ever since the image leaked a while ago.
That being said, the contents of the tapestry is what people think Disney has used AI to at least touch up or partially generate. On the Is This AI subreddit, the poster was subject to pretty intense scrutiny, with the wings of the angels and the middle finger of the woman in the middle key indicators that something could be amiss.
Most are arguing that the angels are the biggest tell that AI could have been used, as each angle has a different build when it comes to their wings. For example, the angel in the top left looks relatively normal, but the one on the middle right has very fork-shaped wings.
“I may be wrong, but the art style on the tapestry looks like AI slop style, even if the whole picture isn’t AI,” says a user called Comfortable-Air-6615. “Dem wings look like good forks for spaghets,” says another called Comfortable_Slice_11.
Other points of the picture that have been mentioned are the border of the tapestry, as it doesn’t have a distinct pattern or density all the way around, and the lamps next to the tapestry, which almost blend into the background.
Of course, it’s worth pointing out that none of this has been confirmed, and that it’s still up in the air whether Disney has at least partially used AI for the poster, but it wouldn’t be the first time that the company has used generative AI for official marketing.
If you can even remember Secret Invasion, the opening for the show was completely AI-generated, featuring rather spooky depictions of human beings. It’s been argued that it was a deliberate choice, but it’s still generative AI, and it’s proof that Marvel has a history of it. Hopefully, it isn;t the case with Avengers Doomsday.
