Andrew Berry, Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson will all be together as important pieces at the dawn of August. However, by the end of the month, Berry may have to make some decisions on the roster that will cost one of the quarterbacks the unofficial title of “relevant” heading into Week 1.
Traditionally, the head coach picks the starting quarterback, but that doesn’t appear to be the case for Cleveland. According to a statement made to Mary Kay Cabot, Berry said “we’ll” name a starting quarterback. The statement hinted that he will have some, or perhaps all, of the final say.

The statement was seemingly bad news already for Todd Monken, but it was also an unfortunate hint about the state of the team. If Berry can’t trust Monken to decide on his own, it signifies that he might feel the pressure to micromanage because his own job is on the line based on how Cleveland does.
Either way, Watson and Sanders will have to worry about winning over both members of the leadership.

Todd Monken gushes about Deion Sanders after Shedeur Sanders’ father pays visit
Shedeur Sanders is in the quarterback competition of his life, but that didn’t stop Deion Sanders from hopping on a plane to watch his son in person. Sanders was spotted at Browns practice and seen having a conversation with Todd Monken, according to Mary Kay Cabot in a Cleveland article posted on Thursday.
“Before practice, Todd Monken got a chance to catch up with Prime in the fieldhouse, which he admitted was a thrill,” she wrote. “Deion had said he’d love to provide insight into his son, and Monken was only too happy to oblige.”
Cabot also delivered what Monken said about the Colorado Buffaloes coach.
“It was really cool,” Monken said. “I mean, that was at Deion Sanders. Are you kidding me? Forget that it’s Shedeur’s dad. I mean, first of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shedeur. Great kid and obviously an elite football player, hell of a baseball player. And then as a coach, I mean, wow. Everything that he’s achieved, that was awesome.”
Monken’s meeting risks giving Browns and Monken doubters plenty of juice if Sanders wins the starting job and struggles in 2026. It will especially be a rough look if Watson gets a run and sees a resurgence later in the year.
If Deion was able to win over Monken, fans may, in turn, hope that Andrew Berry can be the unbiased check on the Browns head coach.
