Canada vs South Africa may not be the best knockout stage clash that we’ll see at the 2026 World Cup, but it’s certainly a difficult one to predict.

Jesse Marsch’s men secured a comprehensive 6-0 victory against Qatar in the group stage, but stuttered to draws in their other fixtures.

South Africa also won just one of their three group clashes, enduring a potentially demoralising loss against Mexico in the tournament’s opener.

If you had asked football fans during the first round of group stages fixtures whether South Africa would be tipped to make a run to the Round of 16, they might have laughed in your face.

But a face-off against Canada, after a dramatic upturn in form during their previous games, is the quality of opponent they would have prayed for heading into the 2026 World Cup knockouts.

Canada have been, by a distance, the weakest of the three co-hosts at this tournament.

They fell narrowly to Switzerland in their final game of the groups, and struggled to break down Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opener.

In their sole victory, it did feel as though Canada were simply destined to make some kind of mark, being co-hosts, and not evidence of a genuinely strong side.

South Africa displayed genuine grit to get results against two strong opponents in South Korea and Czechia, despite a torrid opener vs Mexico that saw them lose 2-0 and suffer two dismissals.

And those games arrived after a truly nightmarish opener vs Mexico, which could have defined the tournament for South Africa, but didn’t.

It already feels like USA and Mexico are locks for Round of 16 action, so, will we really see all three co-hosts make it that far?

Luckily for Canada, their opponent is possible to defeat, should they bring their highest level and not falter under pressure.

These are two teams that don’t possess high-level World Cup history, with Canada never having won a match on this stage until 2026, and South Africa never making it out of the groups before.

This will be a close one, but the South Africans enter the tie in slightly stronger form, having to bounce back from a truly devastating first game at the 2026 World Cup, and will claw their way to victory.

Prediction: Canada 0-1 South Africa
