Carlos Alcaraz came close to suffering a second straight Laver Cup defeat to Taylor Fritz on Saturday.
A year after his shocking defeat to the American in San Francisco, Team Europe’s Alcaraz was pushed by Fritz of Team World once again in London. After being forced to a decisive third-set super tiebreak, the Spaniard faced a match point in the shootout, but held firm to seal the victory, 6-3, 4-6, 13-11.
Team World had put themselves in the lead earlier on in the day, but Alcaraz’s win levelled the scoring, and Team Europe got back in front after triumphing in doubles in the night session.
Carlos Alcaraz matches Roger Federer at the Laver Cup
Laver Cup co-creator Roger Federer was watching from the stands during Alcaraz’s match, and he may have been unaware that the 23-year-old had just matched one of his records. The victory confirmed that Alcaraz is the second player to earn 10 or more points in singles at the Laver Cup after his first five matches at the event, following Federer.
Alcaraz made his Laver Cup debut in 2024, where he earned five points from his first two singles matches. He beat Ben Shelton on day two that year for two points, and overcame Fritz on day three for three points.
In 2025, he lost a singles match at the Laver Cup for the first time with a straight-sets defeat to Fritz, but bounced back on day three to beat Francisco Cerundolo to gain three more points. His most recent win over Fritz has brought his overall points tally in singles at the Laver Cup to 10.

Federer is the only player with a better tally than that across his opening five singles matches at the Laver Cup. The Swiss earned five points from his first two singles matches at the inaugural edition of the event in 2017, beating Sam Querrey on day two and Nick Kyrgios on day three.
At the 2018 Laver Cup, Federer beat Kyrgios once more before battling past John Isner. His fifth win was picked up against the Australian again in 2019, and his sixth and final singles triumph was against Isner that year.
Carlos Alcaraz’s final match at the 2026 Laver Cup on day three
Team Europe have a 7-5 lead heading into the third and final day, and Alcaraz may have the chance to seal the victory for his side. A doubles match will kick off the action on day three, with Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik taking on Fritz and Alex de Minaur.
Alexander Zverev and Learner Tien will then face off in singles, in a match that could be vital for the 20-year-old American to win. If Team Europe win the opening doubles match, Zverev can secure the title by beating Tien and giving them an insurmountable 13-5 lead.
If not, Alcaraz can win the cup for Team Europe when he takes on De Minaur in the night session, with a very important three points up for grabs. The last match of the day is a singles bout between Rafael Jodar and Fritz.
