Charles Jourdain has revealed a scary moment that occurred late in Saturday’s bout against Marlon “Chito” Vera.
Jourdain and Vera collided in the featured preliminary bout of the UFC 331 card. In the third round, Vera connected with a left hook to the body, followed by one to the head. Jourdain crumbled and told referee Mike Beltran that he had enough. The fight was stopped, and Jourdain had good reason to have Beltran wave the fight off.
In a post-fight Instagram Story, Jourdain revealed a big eye problem that spelled doom in the third round (via MMAMania.com).
“Lost my eyesight in the third,” Jourdain wrote. “I waved the fight cause I don’t need to receive more strikes to the head. I lost. I failed.”
Prior to UFC 331, Jourdain mentioned to media members that he needed to undergo surgery in his eye due to issues that led to a 2025 bout cancellation against Ricky Simon.
“I didn’t even know my eyes were wrong,” Jourdain said. “I was just doing my classic eye exam before the fight … and the guy’s like, ‘No, your eye is f–ked up. You cannot fight with that eye. You might lose it.’ What are you talking about, I see properly, I don’t see anything. He’s like ‘No, I cannot let you fight.’
“So we did the surgery a could of weeks after … and I don’t see better or worse, it’s just I had something in my retina, they put a laser in your eye, highly uncomfortable situation, and I thought I would see better. Nothing changed.”
Jourdain was on a three-fight winning streak prior to being stopped by Vera. His top priority after Saturday will be on his eye. Injuries to the eye have been a hot topic within MMA. Tom Aspinall recently had to relinquish the UFC heavyweight title after suffering another setback with his eye issues during a sparring session.
