Marta Kostyuk defeated Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros.

It was Kostyuk who emerged victorious in the all-Ukrainian quarter-final, advancing to her maiden Grand Slam semi-final.

The 23-year-old has looked formidable on clay this year, entering the final four of the French Open unbeaten on the surface.

However, with that being said, seven-time French Open champion Chris Evert still believes there is one question mark over Kostyuk.

Chris Evert questions whether Marta Kostyuk can ‘sustain this level of tennis’ as she reaches Roland Garros last four

During TNT Sports’ French Open coverage, Evert said the following.

“My question is, can she sustain this level of tennis after winning all the clay court tournaments and then getting to the semi-finals?” she said.

“She will have to do it for two more matches if she wants to win this title, and she has to play like this!”

Kostyuk hasn’t lost a match on clay this year, winning a Billie Jean King Cup tie, the Open de Rouen, and the Madrid Open before reaching the French Open semi-finals.

  • 2026 French Open SF vs Mirra Andreeva

You would be forgiven for asking if Kostyuk has enough energy left in the tank for these last few matches at Roland Garros…

But the good news for fans of the Ukrainian is that she skipped the Italian Open, whereas many of her rivals played both clay-court WTA 1000 events before the French Open.

Therefore, she should be fit and ready for two more matches in Paris!

Former world number ones Jim Courier and Mats Wilander were also keen to comment.

“Objects in motion stay in motion, and if you get on a run like that, the mindset is the biggest thing because you remember, I still find ways to win these matches,” said Courier.

“Even if I miss at a big moment or lose a set, I can figure it out.

“There’s less doubt for players who are in this frame of mind.”

“You are playing on instincts the whole time,” added Wilander.

“Decisions are made on heart.

“You feel the situation when you are playing on confidence, whereas you overthink it when you are not. I always say the smartest players in tennis are the ones who want to win the most and don’t think.

“Kostyuk is so good at everything that when she just plays and doesn’t overreact, she is a serious threat.

“She also defends well, she moves unbelievably well, and she is so strong with her legs in the corners.”

Kostyuk is certainly a threat, but can she really go all the way?

Who stands between Marta Kostyuk and the French Open title?

Kostyuk will return to take on Russia’s Mirra Andreeva in the semi-finals.

The Ukrainian leads their head-to-head 2-0, and has already beaten Andreeva this clay season, in the Madrid Open final.

If she can extend her winning record to 3-0, she will meet either Aryna Sabalenka, Diana Shnaider, Anna Kalinskaya, or Maja Chwalinska in the Roland Garros final.

Sabalenka is the clear favourite to reach the final from the top half of the draw and is, unsurprisingly, the favourite to take the title.

The Belarusian made a slow start to her clay-court campaign, failing to impress in Madrid or Rome, but looks back to her best in Paris.

Kostyuk is 0-5 against Sabalenka, although in this form, you wouldn’t want to count her out.

She won’t want to get ahead of herself thinking about the final just yet, anyway, as she now turns her attention to Andreeva and the semi-finals.

Kostyuk and Andreeva will contest their Roland Garros semi-final match on Thursday, June 4.
