CM Punk made his meteoric return to WWE on the July 6 episode of RAW in Chicago and, in the process, turned Friday Night SmackDown upside down by winning the Undisputed Championship, beating Sami Zayn clean. However, this isn’t the only shock Punk fans could be in for, as he could now turn heel for one massive reason.
The Best in the World was never supposed to be in the title match. It all came together on the red brand after Cody Rhodes, the No. 1 Contender for Sami Zayn’s title, was attacked by Gunther and pronounced medically unfit to compete.
Thanks for the submission!
WWE didn’t want to cancel the promised title match, so it found a replacement in Chicago’s own CM Punk, who ended Sami Zayn’s reign in just nine days. Fans have shared mixed reactions, with a large section turning against Punk for ruining Zayn’s title reign.
Considering the current heat he is receiving, WWE could use this to shockingly turn CM Punk heel on the Road to SummerSlam 2026. He can then start building his reported dream match against Cody Rhodes for The Biggest Party of the Summer.
The one massive reason WWE could finally turn Punk a heel, however, is that he is heading into a feud against the company’s golden babyface, Cody Rhodes. Both of them going into their feud as babyfaces would make the rivalry seem unexciting, which is something the company would want to avoid.
Hence, keeping the streak of legends – The Rock, Randy Orton, and John Cena – turning heel against The American Nightmare, Triple H could finally turn Punk heel on the Road to SummerSlam.
Moreover, fans had already seen much of CM Punk’s babyface side when he chased the World Heavyweight Championship, as well as during his reign as champion. Now, to add a new edge to his run and spice things a bit, a heel turn is the best option. Long-time WWE fans know his potential as a heel; now that Punk is back on top, he would work wonders as the bad guy.
That said, the pitch proposed above is merely speculation, and nothing has been confirmed.
Former WWE Champion went off on CM Punk
Following his title loss to The Best in the World on RAW in Chicago, Sami Zayn was seen crashing out in a video the company uploaded on their X/Twitter account. The former Honorary Uce was irate and was seen going off on The Second City Saint.
Here’s what he said:
“9 days after I get it, that piece of sh** can walk back in here after not being here for months, and walk right in and get a chance? That motherf***er! He has no business, no business!” Zayn said.
That said, the WWE Universe will have to wait and see what plans Triple H and his WWE creative team have in store for Punk on The Road to SummerSlam.
