Last week we learned that Bungie will deliver the final update for Destiny 2 on June 9, after which the game will no longer receive any new content. While it was a long time coming, fans were hit with a one-two combo when reports emerged that the studio had no plans for Destiny 3, and that there may be a wave of layoffs.
It’s still unclear if this is due to the declining interest in the series, or because Bungie wants to focus entirely on Marathon. Whatever the case may be, fans have already labelled the new extraction shooter the “Destiny Killer”. In fact, the community has even petitioned Sony, urging it to greenlight Destiny 3, and it may have more signatures than Marathon’s peak concurrent player count.
Manifest Destiny 3
As spotted by Insider Gaming, the petition asks Sony to develop Destiny 3, and has 1,74,502 verified signatures at the time of writing. “The desire for new adventures, fresh storylines, and innovative gameplay features is palpable among players everywhere,” says the petition. “Destiny 3 would not only meet these demands but also expand the horizons of what is possible within this universe.”
As for Marathon’s player count, Insider’s sources at Bungie, as well as Forbes’ Paul Tassi have said that the game currently has a 2:1 split on Steam versus consoles. This indicates that the player count for Marathon would have likely peaked somewhere around 130,000 to 150,000 during the opening weekend, but the exact numbers are unknown.
Of course, just because more people have signed the petition than Marathon’s peak player count, it doesn’t mean that Destiny 3 would get more players if it ever launched. Still, it’s interesting to see that there’s still such a dedicated fanbase for the game despite the last few updates being underwhelming.
