Emma Raducanu is riding a wave of momentum following her impressive run to the Queen’s Club Championships final.

Raducanu, the British number one, defeated Sorana Cirstea and Iva Jovic on her way to the championship match in west London.

Unfortunately for British tennis fans, Raducanu was unable to win the Queen’s title – losing 6-0, 7-6 to lucky loser Donna Vekic.

Despite the loss, Raducanu performed superbly at the event – proving that she is a top-10 level talent on the WTA Tour.

Following her defeat at Queen’s, Raducanu made the decision to withdraw from her final Wimbledon warm-up event in Eastbourne.

When analysing Raducanu’s current position among the WTA’s elite, one can only conclude that this is a very smart decision.

Emma Raducanu will be a seeded player at Wimbledon

Raducanu’s status as a seeded player for Wimbledon was confirmed following Aryna Sabalenka’s victory over Nikola Bartunkova at the Berlin Open.

Raducanu currently sits 32nd on the WTA live rankings, meaning she will likely be seeded 30th for the grass-court major [due to the absences of Victoria Mboko and Hailey Baptiste].

With her seeded status secured, there was little need for Raducanu to take part in Eastbourne.

Of course, the British star will lose a small amount of WTA ranking points as a result of her absence; and some may argue that Raducanu should continue to ramp up her momentum ahead of Wimbledon.

However, when considering the physical issues Raducanu has faced this year, one cannot blame the 23-year-old for choosing to spend some time away from the limelight ahead of her biggest event of the year.

Let us know why in the comments!

Raducanu recently recovered from the effects of a long-term viral illness – a sickness that prevented her from competing on the Tour for three months.

Of course, one cannot truly come to any conclusions regarding the Briton’s current health. However, after such a long period on the sidelines, it would not be surprising if Raducanu has – in part – made this schedule decision to protect her long-term health.

In summary, Raducanu’s decision to withdraw from Eastbourne is wise – she has given herself extra time to prepare for her most important event under the guidance of coach Andrew Richardson, while also reducing the risk of injury ahead of the major tournament.

Emma Raducanu’s 2025 Wimbledon campaign

Emma Raducanu has always seemed at home on the grass courts – particularly at Wimbledon.

The first significant WTA success of her career occurred at the 2021 Championships, when she reached the fourth round in her first appearance at the London event.

Last year, Raducanu reached the third round, defeating Mimi Xu and 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova en route.

Raducanu put in a stellar performance against Aryna Sabalenka in the third round but ultimately walked away empty handed.

  • First round: defeated Mimi Xu 6-3, 6-3
  • Second round: defeated Marketa Vondrousova 7-6, 6-4
  • Third round: defeated by Aryna Sabalenka, 7-6, 6-4

Sabalenka, who went on to reach the semi-finals, defeated Raducanu 7-6, 6-4 on Wimbledon Centre Court.

“It’s hard to take a loss like that,” Raducanu said afterwards. “At the same time, I’m playing Aryna, who is No. 1 in the world, a great champion. I have to be proud of my effort today.

“Positives was that I was toe to toe with her. Before the match, I actually went into this match feeling more confident than previous matches against the top, but I think there is a big difference in first serve. I think that’s something that I need to improve on.

“It does give me confidence because I think the problem before was that I felt like I was gulfs away from the very top. Having a match like that where I had chances in both sets, it does give me confidence. At the same time, it’s very difficult to take right now.”

“She played such incredible tennis, and she pushed me so hard to get this win,” Sabalenka said. “I fought for every point like crazy and I’m super happy with the win. I’m happy to see her healthy, back on track and soon she will be back in the top 10.”

“She was making me move a lot, serving well, from the baseline she was playing great tennis. I was trying to stay focused, put as many balls as I could on that side and try to put all the pressure on her.”
