Esports is suddenly threatening traditional sports in prediction market volume

If you thought prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi were reserved exclusively for political nerds or macroeconomics junkies, the latest trading data might shock you. Digital event contracts are blowing up, and competitive video games are quietly chasing down established, traditional sports leagues in raw volume.

While the NFL and NBA still sit comfortably at the top of the food chain, esports trading volume is closing the gap at a terrifying speed. Esports matches on Polymarket and Kalshi are now routinely outperforming or breathing down the neck of established major leagues like the NHL.

League of Legends and CS2 Are Moving Financial Mountains

It turns out that Gen Z treats tracking map picks and gold leads like trading options on Wall Street. Over the past year, users traded over $1.2 billion on esports events on Polymarket alone, with Kalshi pulling in a casual $1 billion of its own.

League of Legends and Counter-Strike 2 are doing almost all the heavy lifting. LoL matches on Polymarket pulled in an average of over $1 million in trading volume per match, with one single high-stakes series peaking at a ridiculous $28.3 million. On Kalshi, League of Legends matches averaged $4.8 million in daily volume over the past month, while CS2 averaged $4 million. Even Valorant is getting in on the action, shooting up from under $1 million in daily trades earlier this year to casually clearing $2 million a day.

Welcome to the Era of “Combinatoric Athletic Outcome Contracts”

If that headline phrase sounds like something cooked up in an Ivy League finance lab, that is because it basically was. It is just the super-fancy corporate term Polymarket uses for parlays.

Parlays have taken over prediction markets. Over on Kalshi, parlay volume reached a staggering $14.4 billion in a single month, officially eclipsing single-event trading. Polymarket just launched its own parlay beta in the United States, allowing users to stack multiple esports match outcomes into a single ticket.

While parlays feature wildly inflated total numbers because the potential payout inflates the recorded volume, they are a massive cash cow for market makers because the odds of actually hitting a multi-leg parlay are notoriously low.

Regulators Are Cracking Down as the Hype Escalates

Of course, you cannot have this much money moving around on the internet without governments stepping in to spoil the party. The massive growth surge comes right as regulators across the globe start slamming down the ban hammer.

South Korea and Denmark both banned Polymarket recently, bringing the total number of restricted countries for the platform to over 40. Over in the United States, state-level regulators are picking fights too, with Washington state becoming the latest jurisdiction to block Kalshi alongside Nevada and Michigan.

Whether prediction platforms can outrun the mounting legal headaches remains to be seen. One thing is crystal clear: esports fans are treating match outcomes like a legitimate asset class, and they have zero intention of going back to traditional sportsbooks.
