G2 have eliminated Legacy from the IEM Cologne Major with a quick 2-0 victory.

CAC champions Legacy can deem their season a success with their number six ranking on VRS, but will look back on the Major with regret after a patchy campaign.

It was not as stark a collapse as last time out at the Budapest Major, at least, where Legacy also came in with high expectations but were knocked out in Stage 1; but the manner of G2’s victory will leave a sour taste in their mouthes as they go off to their summer break.

Having destroyed PARIVISION in the 0-2 match, Legacy hoped to come into the G2 game with confidence.

But, with sickness affecting some players, and their coach Alan “adrrr” Riveros barred after communication infractions, they were dealt a few blows before even booting their PCs for the 1-2 match. And when they let go of a 4v2 in the first round of Dust2, the tone was set.

Like 9z against Aurora, we saw what happened when a momentum-based team is denied any momentum at all. Nikita “HeavyGod” Martynenko was a constant menace on both T and CT, while all five of G2’s players had their moments.

“Stage 2 was not enough in the BO1s but the BO3s were good,” Eduardo “dumau” Wolkmer said post-game to Martin “STYKO” Styk. “We had high expectations for Stage 3, but we got sick, it affected us, we didn’t play our best. We were off, everybody, it’s a result we deserved.”

“The season was good but the Major is our goal,” he added. “The way we played the Major was not enough.”

For G2, the goal is clear. One more match will decide whether they beat the 9-11th place finishes from Budapest and Austin, or if it will be three Major group stage exits in a row.
