God of War Laufey will comfortably be released in time to avoid PlayStation’s disc doomsday in January 2028. The Faye-led game is even getting its own collector’s box. However, as has become commonplace in the current gaming landscape, the newly revealed collector’s box does not include a copy of the game.
God Of War Laufey Collector’s Box Details
The God of War Laufey collector’s box appears to have been quietly released this morning. It’s currently available to pre-order in the UK for £129.99, but isn’t listed on PlayStation’s US site yet. That’s likely because PlayStation opens pre-orders at 10 am local time, meaning the collector’s box should become available in the US later today.
It also means we don’t know how much it will cost. Potentially as much as $170.
There are three exclusive items inside the box. A mini artbook, an Oracle Deck of 51 cards, each one featuring unique artwork that details a different part of Faye’s journey, and the leading reason why God of War fans will be willing to shell out for a CE that doesn’t include the game – a statue.
The statue depicts Faye swinging her sword down on an enemy as she uses another for leverage. The God of War protagonist is not alone, though. She’s accompanied by Phranque, the sentient cube voiced by Jack Quaid that will accompany Faye in Laufey. There appear to be several smaller Phranques incorporated throughout the statue’s design too, and I’m assuming it will be Phranque that lights up.
Game Sold Separately
The game itself is not mentioned in the list of what’s included in the Laufey collector’s box, and there’s a note at the top of the store page informing potential customers that the game is sold separately. Considering the price of the box, it shouldn’t come as a shock that the game isn’t included. If it were, it would effectively mean you’re getting a statue and everything else in the box for roughly $80 based on its price in the UK.
Still, the ongoing trend of selling collector’s editions without a copy of the game, coupled with PlayStation’s desire for an all-digital future, continues to leave a bad taste in consumers’ mouths, and this won’t help. It comes only a few weeks after GTA 6 did the same thing. It took a long time for the GTA 6 collector’s edition to sell out despite the overwhelming demand for anything connected to the game. That spells bad news for how well this Laufey box will potentially sell, although the GTA 6 collector’s edition was significantly more expensive.
