Holger Rune played in his first match in 11 months this week and won.

It marked a triumphant moment for the Danish star, who was competing in his home country and for his nation at the Davis Cup.

First beating Bulgarian youngster Iliyan Radulov in straight sets, the 23-year-old was then handed his first big test since returning, tasked with facing Grigor Dimitrov next.

And, whilst it was a hard-fought encounter, Holger Rune emerged victorious, winning a third-set tiebreaker.

Do you believe that Alexander Zverev will win Grand Slams in 2027 with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz back?

It’s so good to see him back competing again.

When he ruptured his Achilles tendon back in October of last year, many feared for his career. Such an injury can have irreparable effects on a player, and especially one as explosive and athletic as Rune.

However, in rather shocking fashion, Dimitrov has now explained how he almost wishes he’d suffered such a setback earlier in his career.

Grigor Dimitrov claims he wishes he’d had an obstacle like Holger Rune’s injury earlier in his career

That’s following an interview he did with SpilXperten, actually given before he faced Rune.

Discussing his opponent’s injury, Dimitrov theorised how he might return to action, before explaining how it could actually end up being a positive learning experience in the long run.

He admitted: “There is always going to be a generational change in any sport and I have no doubt Holger is a part of that and that he is going to do very well in the upcoming years. I hope he will not only learn but grow from this experience.

“In a way, I… This is f——- up, what I am going to say about myself, but I have been so fortunate throughout my career to never have anything major, up until some years ago and sometimes I kind of wish that I had a bigger obstacle earlier on in my career, just like Holger now.

“That’s really my advice for him: to learn and grow from this experience. We learn and grow from pain; that’s just life unfortunately, both on and off the court. That’s why I tell you that I have no doubt that he will be a fantastic player. No doubt. The rest is entirely up to him.”

Rune has been backed to win a Grand Slam title during his career following this impressive return to action.

Holger Rune responds to Grigor Dimitrov’s claims about his injury

Speaking to the same source, Rune then provided his response to such shocking comments.

He understood the sentiment behind them, stating: “I can 100% understand what Grigor is saying. He’s actually talking about a very interesting subject there. It is really s—- being injured. It really sucks getting injured, and I wouldn’t wish anyone to have to go through this, but you do learn a lot from it.

“It puts things into perspective. You see things a little more clearly, in a way. When I was just playing tournaments week after week, you don’t really have time to think that much about things, because it’s always about the next tournament.

“Now I’ve had the opportunity to really dive into a lot of different things. There hasn’t been any pressure.

“I also think I appreciate playing tennis more now. I appreciate the life I have more. I have a unique opportunity to make a living from my dream simply by playing tennis. That also makes you mentally stronger, because if this can’t break me, then nothing can.

“If I can come back stronger from this, then I can handle anything. There are no opponents on the court who can be as difficult as what I’ve just been through.”

This kind of positive outlook is so promising for Rune, who will hope to return to his very best just in time for the 2027 season.
