Spain have won the 2026 World Cup and claimed custody of Hatsune Miku at the tournament’s final possible moment.
The virtual singer began the tournament with her native team of Japan but has changed hands four times during the knockout stage. Brazil, Norway, England, and Argentina have each inherited Miku after eliminating her previous owner.
Fans have marked every exchange by redesigning her in the winning country’s clothing, colors, and cultural motifs. The joke has generated millions of views on X and even produced an ominous pattern: every country that has held Miku has lost its next match 2-1.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final, ending Argentina’s brief reign and becoming the sixth and final country to own Miku during the increasingly elaborate online custody battle.

June 26: One post starts the Hatsune Miku custody battle
The custody battle began three days before Japan faced Brazil in the Round of 32.
X user Rosco Graves laid out the entire premise in one sentence: “Japan vs Brazil in the World Cup, whoever wins keeps Hatsune Miku.”
The post received more than 1.6 million views and 118,000 likes as fans began treating the match as a fight between the original Japanese Miku and her popular Brazilian counterpart.
The timing was perfect. Brazilian Miku had helped ignite the “World Miku” trend in 2024, inspiring artists to redesign the virtual singer as if she came from their own countries, cities, and cultures. More than 3,000 regional variants were eventually collected on the fan-run Miku.earth map, which resurfaced during the World Cup as the custody meme exploded.
The World Cup effectively gave those thousands of designs a knockout tournament.
June 29: Brazil takes Miku from Japan
Japan entered its match against Brazil as Miku’s original owner, but that status did not survive the Round of 32.
Kaishu Sano gave Japan the lead in the 29th minute, only for Brazil to respond with two goals and win 2-1. Under the internet’s newly established rules, Miku officially became Brazilian.
Fans celebrated by putting her in Brazil jerseys, denim shorts, and other designs inspired by the Brazilian Miku trend. Artwork presenting the game as a battle between the two versions spread across X, while videos advertised it as the “Hatsune Miku custody match.”
At this point, the joke could have ended with Brazil’s victory. Instead, Miku traveled with the team into its next knockout match.
That created the rule that would carry the meme through the tournament: any country that eliminates Miku’s current owner inherits custody.
July 5: Norway begins Miku’s Viking era
Brazil’s time with Miku lasted less than a week.
Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway eliminated Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16, sending Miku from South America to Scandinavia.
The handoff transformed the original joke into a running World Cup storyline. A post declaring “Hatsune Miku is Officially Norwegian”, alongside an edit of Haaland carrying a Miku plush, surpassed 4.1 million views and 51,000 likes.
Artists reimagined Miku as a Viking warrior equipped with axes, armor, fur coats, and horned helmets. One particularly viral comic captioned “Goodbye, Brazilian Miku…” depicted the latest exchange and received more than 1.9 million views and 208,000 likes within four days.
There was also now the beginning of a suspicious pattern. Japan had Miku and lost 2-1. Brazil then inherited her and immediately lost 2-1.
Norway was next.
July 11: England brings Miku home
Norway appeared capable of holding onto Miku after Andreas Schjelderup gave the team the lead against England in the quarterfinals.
Jude Bellingham equalized before scoring again in extra time, however, giving England another 2-1 victory and transferring custody for the third consecutive match.
“Miku now belongs to England. God save the Miku,” artist Kivo declared in a post that received more than 1.6 million views and 115,000 likes.
English Miku appeared in everything from knight armor to punk-inspired outfits, while other edits showed Harry Kane carrying a Miku plush beneath the St. George’s flag. Fans naturally paired the handoff with chants that Miku was “coming home.”
England’s victory also revived an older Vocaloid meme claiming that “Hatsune Miku does not talk to British people.” Comics showed Miku reluctantly accepting her new nationality despite her supposed refusal to communicate with them.
The bigger concern was that England had continued the exact same sequence.
Japan lost possession of Miku 2-1. Brazil lost her 2-1. Norway had now lost her 2-1. Before England’s semifinal, fans were already asking whether Miku was the real World Cup curse.
July 15: Argentina claims Miku as the 2-1 curse strikes again
For most of the semifinal, England looked ready to become the first country to survive a match while holding Miku.
Anthony Gordon put England ahead shortly after halftime, leaving the team minutes away from reaching its first World Cup final since 1966.
Argentina then completed a dramatic late comeback. Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez scored in stoppage time, giving Argentina a 2-1 victory.
Miku had changed hands again—and the result was exactly the same for a fourth consecutive exchange.
Fans declared her officially Argentinian, with one viral edit showing Lionel Messi kissing a Miku plush. Kivo followed the English artwork with an Argentinian Miku sending her former owner home.
The 2-1 pattern became the defining part of the meme after the match. Artist ramen.png illustrated every result before showing Argentinian Miku being warned that she was “next on the 2-1 Miku curse.”
That post has amassed more than 1.4 million views and 113,000 likes.
July 19: Argentina and Spain fight for Miku in the World Cup final
Spain has reached the World Cup final without previously entering the custody battle.
While Miku moved through the opposite side of the bracket, Spain defeated France 2-0 to set up a final against defending champion Argentina. It is now the only country capable of claiming her before the tournament ends.
If Argentina wins, it will retain custody and become the first holder to survive its next match. It would also break the supposed Miku curse after Japan, Brazil, Norway, and England all fell by the same score.
If Spain wins, Miku will change nationalities for the fifth time and leave the World Cup as Spanish Miku. A 2-1 Spain victory would complete the curse in perfect fashion.
Either way, one of the strangest stories of the 2026 World Cup will finally have its last owner—at least until the internet finds another competition to put Hatsune Miku on the line.
July 19: Spain defeat Argentina to become Miku’s final owners
Argentina arrived in the World Cup final with custody of Miku after defeating England 2-1 in the semi-final. They appeared to have an opportunity to become the first new owner to survive the curse, but Spain had other plans.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 taking both the World Cup trophy and ownership of the virtual pop star. Spanish Miku had not previously appeared anywhere in the custody chain, allowing the country to swoop in during the final and end the tournament as her last owner.
Miku’s complete World Cup journey therefore finishes as Japan → Brazil → Norway → England → Argentina → Spain.
