Holger Rune fans will have to wait even longer to see their favourite player back in action.

Rune tore his Achilles at the Stockholm Open last year, which he very quickly underwent surgery on.

The former world number four has since been trying to recover to come back to the ATP Tour, with Rune initially announcing his return for the clay court season ahead of Roland Garros.

None of these attempted comebacks have been able to come off yet, and Rune has now cast doubt over whether he will be able to play the US Open this year.

Holger Rune withdraws from the Cincinnati Open

Rune has been releasing footage of him back training on court ahead of a potential return during the North American hard court swing, which was initially planned for this week’s Canadian Open.

However, after withdrawing from the ATP tournament in Montreal, Rune was set to return at the Cincinnati Open.

It has now been confirmed that Rune has also pulled out of the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.

Rune has officially been replaced by rising young Spaniard Daniel Merida, with doubt starting to increase over whether he will play at the US Open.

Having not played any match since October last year, it appears unlikely that Rune would risk further injuring himself by playing best-of-five set matches straight away at the US Open.

Withdrawals from the Cincinnati Open so far

Rune is not the only high-profile withdrawal from this year’s Cincinnati Open, with seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz also pulling out as he postpones his comeback from a wrist injury.

Alcaraz and Rune are two of five confirmed withdrawals from this year’s Cincinnati Open, being joined by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Alexander Bublik and Sebastian Korda, the latter of whom has just undergone surgery.

There have also been a number of withdrawals from the women’s singles draw in Cincinnati including Emma Raducanu, Victoria Mboko and Hailey Baptiste.

One player who is confirmed to play is Novak Djokovic, who will make his return to the Cincinnati Open for the first time since he won the title in 2023.

The main draw of the 2026 Cincinnati Open will get underway on Thursday, August 13.
