Wrestling veteran Bully Ray has argued that a former WWE superstar and champion is not being utilized properly in AEW. The talent in question, Claudio Castagnoli, has a massive title match coming up later this month.
The Swiss Cyborg has emerged as a regular staple of All Elite Wrestling television since his arrival in the company years ago in 2022. He appears in the Jacksonville-based promotion as one of the foundational members of The Death Riders under Jon Moxley’s leadership, also serving as a mentor to the group’s up-and-comers, Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta. Courtesy of a dual contract, Claudio also wrestles for AEW’s partner promotion, CMLL.
During an interview last month, Paul Heyman had spoken about Castagnoli never being consistently pushed as a main-event tier singles talent during his WWE tenure. On a recent edition of Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray claimed that The Advocate’s remarks should push The King of Swing to contemplate whether he is being underused in AEW, insinuating that Tony Khan has not been able to book the former ROH World Champion and All Elite Wrestling World Trios Champion as a top player either.
“If I’m Claudio [Castagnoli] and I heard what Paul Heyman said during the Chris Van Vliet interview, … my ears and brain are open to be like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be background noise. Maybe I’m really that f***ing good. And maybe I still have a lot of gas in my tank and something to offer, so I shouldn’t be sitting here like a back-up singer,'” Bully stated. [H/T- Wrestling Inc]
Claudio Castagnoli has a title match set for AEW Redemption
On the July 15 edition of Wednesday Night Dynamite, Daniel Garcia and Wheeler Yuta, the “Dark Horses” of The Death Riders, went to war with AEW World Tag Team Champions Adam Copeland and Christian Cage. The budding stars did their best to take down the veterans, but the erstwhile Edge and Christian were ultimately successful at scoring the win.
Unfortunately, The Rated-R Superstar and The Patriarch were jumped by Claudio Castagnoli and The Dogs, who dished out a post-match beatdown until The Bang Bang Gang arrived to make the save. Later on Cage and Cope issued a challenge to The Death Riders’ “Emissary of Violence”, and to his stable-mate PAC, to face them in a tag team title match at Redemption 2026.
It remains to be seen whether Castagnoli is poised to hold AEW gold again on July 26 in Montreal.
