WNBA fans are curious about Sophie Cunningham’s future with the Indiana Fever. Cunningham will enter the offseason as a free agent after her one-year deal expires following the 2026 season.
Fans want the former Missouri guard to return for a third season. She appeared in 43 games this season, averaging 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists on 41.9% shooting from deep.
Ahead of the offseason, the Fever have also made front office changes. Kelly Krauskopf stepped down as the team president last week. Following that, Indiana fired general manager Amber Cox after two seasons.
On Sunday, Cunningham reacted to the Fever’s early offseason front office moves.
“Kelly and Amber, they’re phenomenal, phenomenal people,” Cunningham said. “They cared about us as players and as individuals outside the court. So, I have nothing but great things to say about them. Hopefully, the Fever come in and bring people who can do a really good job for that program.”
“I was blessed to be under Kelly and Amber, and I wish them the very best and we’ll see what happens.”
Amid Sophie Cunningham’s uncertain future, Fever fans shared their thoughts.
“If CC wants Sophie to stay, Sophie will stay,” a fan said.
“She’s gone, and she knows it,” another fan commented.
“Will she be surprised when she is not back at the Fever next season?” one fan said.
More fans reacted to Cunningham’s comments.
“She’s smart, not trying to burn bridges or throw them under the bus. Maybe she wants to come back playing for the Fever,” someone commented.
“Hopefully, that means she’s gone,” a comment read.
“She sounds like she’s dissociating from the Fever, dawg😭. She leaving?” one fan commented.
Amber Cox Praised Sophie Cunningham’s Leadership Before Getting Fired
The Fever were asked about their offseason plans following an early postseason exit. Former general manager Amber Cox backed the value that Sophie Cunningham brings to the team. During the team’s exit interview, Cox praised Cunningham for being a “solid leader” when asked about the player’s future.
“(Cunningham) is a really solid leader in the locker room,” the former executive said. “She brings levity, but also brings a lot of experience. She’s serious and is an important voice in our locker room when we need it, when we really need to lock in.”
Cox was one of the main reasons Indiana acquired Sophie Cunningham. The Fever traded for the shooting guard in 2025 via a four-team deal with the Phoenix Mercury, Connecticut Sun and Dallas Wings.
“Sophie is a player that we have targeted for a while, and one that we believe is a perfect fit for the style we want to play,” the former general manager said.
Cunningham has become a favorite in Indiana.
