In our forums, one user has sparked quite the debate when they explained why they’ve seen improvements in their game after avoiding golf fittings. Some agree, while others vehemently disagree with their analysis.

@BallHooker wrote:

“I’ve always considered fittings bs, because each club head and shaft needs to be hit a bit differently and switching between option does not give any ”get used to it” time.

“Earlier this week I brought my irons in for maintenance (shortening shafts, changing grips, adjusting swing weights). While I waiting, I found an interesting driver at an ok’ish price and decided to buy it (GT2 demo with a Tour AD DI-6X shaft). I’ve been gaming the LA Golf driver for a while and as those 2 clubs are very different, the new driver did not work at all at first… huge fades and low shots for days. Now today, third round with the new driver, I was bombing the best drives of the summer through the whole round. The club required a slightly differently timed release and a small gripping adjustment. A fitting would not have suggested this driver to me, but now I see unbelievably great results after learning to hit it.

“The same applies to other clubs, like irons. Playing with blades for couple of years has brought my striking to a completely new level. In no way would a fitting have resulted in a suggestion to play blades. Or putters… It was well worth learning to putt with LAB. It did not work with the same stroke I used with my Scotty, but now I’m putting much better after a bit of time spent learning.

“Has anyone else fought against fittings? Is there any sensible reason to rather get fitted than actually learning to hit the ball better, using equipment that forces development? I don’t think that fitting improves scores. I’ve been through some fittings and my strong feeling is that learning to play better is much more important.”

Our members in the forum shared opinions, both in favor of fittings and against them. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • @phizzy30: “A fitting only hurts the player if the fitter is stubborn, closed minded and full of himself. You’d be surprised at what a good fitter can do for you provided you go in with an open mind and also be brand agnostic. I will say though, a good fitter is like a diamond in the rough. Once you find one, pick his brain and get as much info you can based on your numbers and how the clubs feel/perform that way you can make better decisions based upon what works and what doesn’t in the future.”
  • @CountryClubChef: “I’m certainly feeling the technology overload since coming back to golf. When I was younger the only “fitting” was measuring your swing speed and doing the plastic lie board. Now it’s such an overwhelming amount of information both on club data, ball data, then you get on the course and all the apps and stuff… I’m getting to the point where I’m leaning towards being an analog golfer through and through. Play what feels good, I like the ball flight and a laser and stop flooding my brain with information. It got me to scratch once, I feel like I could do it again if I’m not trying to optimize 46 variables on a computer screen.”
  • @DLiver: “The good thing about being fit (well) is that you can be pretty sure that the problem isn’t the club.”
  • @Stuart_G: “I can’t blame people for writing off ‘fittings.’But they are not really giving up on fittings, they are giving up on the vast majority of the the people out there that call themselves a ‘fitter’ but don’t deserve the title. A lot of people would be better off taking on the responsibility for fitting themselves instead of relying on self glorified salespeople.”
