Manchester United are closing in on completing their first signing of the summer with a deal almost agreed with Atalanta for Éderson. It’s understood that only minor details in regards to payment structures need to be finalised but the total package will be slightly under €45 million – Sky Sports are reporting the breakdown as €40.5m upfront, plus €3.5m in add-ons. United are in a strong negotiating position with the 26-year-old in the last year of his contract with the midfielder currently valued at €40m on Transfermarkt.
United and Atalanta enjoy a strong relationship from negotiations for Amad Diallo and Rasmus Højlund in recent years and it’s viewed as a matter of time until a full agreement is reached. Contract terms won’t be an issue with Ederson on a modest salary in Serie A and the player is determined to move to Old Trafford. Transfermarkt understands that Ederson has been on United’s radar for over two years, but they’ve decided to move this summer with their priority to add at least two central midfielders – realistically three if Manuel Ugarte is sold, as desired.
Casemiro’s departure has left a void in United’s midfield, but Ederson won’t be the statement signing that INEOS aim to make in this department. The Brazilian international won’t be a guaranteed starter under Michael Carrick but can provide cover for the first-choice midfield trio – alongside Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and a new signing – and he will be expected to push for a starting role. Ederson has made 180 appearances for Atalanta since joining from Salernitana in 2022 and was instrumental in their Europa League triumph in 2024. The Brazilian was left out of Atalanta’s final Serie A game of the weekend against Fiorentina due to negotiations with United and a deal is edging closer. The view from Italy on Ederson
Éderson has an excellent reputation in Italy — pretty much every fan of the top Serie A clubs would have liked to have him in their team. That’s thanks to his strengths: versatility, the ability to be everywhere on the pitch, stamina, tactical intelligence, vision, his ability to always make the right decision, and great dynamism. He can play as a defensive midfielder in a duo, as a box-to-box midfielder, and even as an attacking midfielder.
He can be a bit inconsistent in front of goal and he’s not a prolific scorer, but he helps the team in many other ways. In practice, he was one of the key figures behind Atalanta’s Europa League triumph together with Ademola Lookman. He’s perfectly suited to the Premier League because he has the right dynamism and mentality.
