Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are still considered by many as the best two players on the ATP Tour.
Sinner and Alcaraz have not been at the same tournament together since playing each other in the Monte Carlo Masters final in April.
Since then, Alcaraz has been out of action for nearly five months due to a right wrist injury until recently returning at the US Open, while Sinner has been out with a right knee injury since winning Wimbledon.
With Alcaraz continuing his comeback at the Laver Cup, former world number one John McEnroe has made a plea to both players as he revealed who he thinks is the better of the two.
John McEnroe claims Carlos Alcaraz is the best player in the world
After Alcaraz won the Australian Open back in January, he and Sinner had won nine consecutive Grand Slam titles.
Injury has meant that this run has since come to an end, with Alexander Zverev winning both the US Open and Roland Garros this year. However, many still believe that Alcaraz and Sinner are the best two players in men’s tennis when fit.
McEnroe appears to be included in this and ahead of the Laver Cup, he stated his belief that Alcaraz is the better player ahead of Sinner, but he made a plea for both to be injury-free at the same time.
“I think when they’re both playing their best, my personal opinion is that Carlos Alcaraz is the best player,” said McEnroe, as shown in a video from The Tennis Pass.
“Jannik obviously is an incredible player and if Carlos is a little bit off his game then I believe Sinner’s the best. But now that they’ve both been injured, I just want both of them to stay healthy, please, both of you stay healthy!”

Taylor Fritz agrees with John McEnroe about Carlos Alcaraz
With Sinner’s immediate future currently up in the air, it has given Zverev a big opportunity to become world number one for the first time by the end of the year.
However, world number 10 Taylor Fritz appears to agree with McEnroe that neither Sinner nor Zverev are the best player in the world right now and instead Alcaraz when he is at his best.
“It’s tough. Sascha’s won two Slams this year, it’s tough to go against him. But yeah, I guess we’ll see at the World Tour Finals at the end of the year, but I think when Carlos is playing his best it’s Carlos and then Sinner before he was injured was extremely dominant earlier this year,” said Fritz.
Fritz will be hoping that Alcaraz is not at his best when he faces him in singles at the Laver Cup, having already lost to him in doubles.
The American has lost five of his six previous matches against Alcaraz, but Fritz did beat the Spaniard at the Laver Cup last year.
