Former BMF champion Jorge Masvidal, 41, insists he remains in active negotiations for a return to the Octagon with matchmakers.
Amidst a busy time in the UFC’s welterweight division, one of its biggest legends could be on the way back to the Octagon after a lengthy hiatus.
Jorge Masvidal, who retired from Mixed Martial Arts following a loss at UFC 287, began to tease a retirement reversal last year. Masvidal was offered a fight on the recent Most Valuable Promotions card, featuring Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano, but the UFC shut down his planned return after refusing to let him out of his contract.
Since dropping the gloves at UFC 287, Masvidal returned to combat sports in a boxing match against Nate Diaz, losing on the scorecards. Now, Masvidal says he has a score to settle in the UFC.
Jorge Masvidal says Leon Edwards is on his radar to ‘close’ UFC chapter
In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Masvidal was asked about a potential fighting return and teased imminent news.
“I’ve been talking to the UFC,” Masvidal said.
“Could be this year, could be early next year. We’ve been talking for a little bit, and the numbers are getting closer and closer and better and better. So there might be some big news coming soon. Nothing worth mentioning yet; waiting for the right names and stuff.
“Once they give me the right name and the right number attached to that, you’ll see your boy right back over here at the T-Mobile Arena,” Masvidal continued. “Leon (Edwards) is definitely somebody that I would like to get back in (with) and just close that chapter out.”
Former UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards has three consecutive fights, including most recently against Carlos Prates at UFC 322. Masvidal and Edwards were involved in a viral, backstage brawl after sharing a UFC card in London in March 2019.
