An impressive Kingdom Hearts 3 modding project is adding three-player co-op to the game that lets Sora, Riku, Kairi, and Aqua fight the Heartless at the same time.
From rhythm games to cutscene compilations, Kingdom Hearts has gone to a lot of different places in the 24 years since the series started. That even includes some brief forays into multiplayer through 358/2’s underrated mode and the multiple mobile games (including the cancelled Missing Link) that focused more on social elements.
That being said, the mainline Kingdom Hearts games have exclusively been single-player action-RPGs. While I wouldn’t change that for the world, I have always wondered what a multiplayer component to Kingdom Hearts would look like and, based on a mod project that’s aiming to add just that to Kingdom Hearts 3, there might actually be more merit to it than we all assumed.
Kingdom Hearts 3 Mod Project Is Adding Four-Player Multiplayer
As If Sora Wasn’t Overpowered Enough On His Own
As pointed out by Twitter user ProdigyxCD, a Kingdom Hearts 3 multiplayer mod project is currently in development called KH 3 Re:Multiplayer. A “quick glimpse” at the project was debuted on the team’s Twitter page, which shared a gameplay video of Sora, Riku, and Kairi all fighting together against KH3’s variant of Darkside.
Don’t Worry, Square Enix Hasn’t Forgotten About Kingdom Hearts
I’m not coping, I’m just getting a new high score.
If you’re anything like me, then your first thought was probably that having two more controlled players is going to make the already easy Kingdom Hearts 3 an absolute cakewalk, then you’re onto something. Even on Critical difficulty, Darkside’s health bar is absolutely obliterated every time he takes an attack from the team, and that’s before a surprise fourth member shows up.
KH 3 Re:Multiplayer doesn’t just add three-player multiplayer to Kingdom Hearts 3; it actually adds four-player co-op, as shown by the whole team taking on the Demon Tide at once later on in the video. Considering how fast-paced KH3’s combat already is, it’s pretty impressive that a modding team has managed to get this working so well already.
Kingdom Hearts 3’s Remind DLC also let us play as Roxas, so I’m betting that he’s going to be an option whenever this mod ends up releasing.
There doesn’t appear to be a release window for the mod project right now, but it’s worth noting that there have been videos about a Kingdom Hearts 3 multiplayer mod since all the way back in 2022. The Discord appears to be different from the one that’s been shown off most recently, so I’m not sure if this is a project that’s been reborn or another one altogether. It’s still very cool, though, whatever the case.
