A man says he was fired from a job after leaking adverts for Grand Theft Auto 6 on Miami Beach, but he “understands” why.
Over the last few months, Rockstar Games has been ramping up their marketing for GTA 6. That started with the pre-order window kicking off, an extended look at gameplay on Netflix, as well as a launch trailer being released.
Amongst all that, they have also been hard at work turning the real-life city of Miami into Vice City. Advertisements have gone up at the Miami Heat’s Kaseya Center, downtown hotels have got GTA 6 artwork plastered on the side of them, and Vice City-themed beach equipment has hit Miami Beach.
The latter of those was revealed by a TikToker, Graham Simmon, prior to them being handed out on October 15. Simmon’s video was quickly screenshotted and shared across social media, leading to him losing his job.
Worker claims GTA 6 cost him his job
Graham confirmed he’d lost his job in a follow-up TikTok on October 20, admitting it was “my fault” and that he ‘understood’ why he was let go.
“I posted it, it had less than 1000 views, and I was told to take them down and unfortunately, for me, people took those and posted them all over the internet,” he said.
“The company I worked for really didn’t like that, so they let me go. Now, I’m no longer allowed to work for them. So, yeah, basically, GTA 6 cost me my job.”
These ads are part of a $4 million deal between Rockstar and Boucher Brothers, with the City of Miami wanting more cash to prop up advertisements at other locations, including Miami International Airport.
As noted, the on-location marketing has really hit Miami, with Grand Theft Auto-themed cars being spotted driving around the city.
There have been some claims online that it could be filming for another trailer, or at least another social media video from Rockstar, while others have suggested it is to promote the Miami Heat’s ‘Vice City’ night.
iGrandTheftAuto also found that three beer labels connected to GTA 6 have been approved by the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which could pop up in stores and bars.
With under a month until the long-awaited game launches, time will tell if Rockstar drops anything further.
