In her first match back in Toronto, Andreeva defeated Karolina Pliskova in straight sets, winning comfortably, 6-0, 6-2.

Asked in her post-match press conference after beating Pliskova if she enjoyed the time off after Wimbledon, Andreeva said: “Yeah, I think that time off was very much needed.

“I just wanted to switch off from tennis completely and just have some time off. I didn’t play tennis for almost a week, so that was just nice mentally to forget about everything.

“I was actually very excited to start playing because I was kind of tired of practicing already. So, yeah, I was super excited to start the tournament here.”

Andreeva is making the second appearance of her career at the Canadian Open, having made her tournament debut last year.

In 2025, Andreeva was knocked out in the third round of the WTA 1000 competition, losing to McCartney Kessler.

Mirra Andreeva reflects on her poor grass season

After a phenomenal clay swing, during which Andreeva captured her first major crown at Roland Garros, the young star had a disappointing grass season.

Andreeva lost in her first match of the Bad Homburg Open before crashing out in round two at Wimbledon.

Asked if she felt ready for the grass swing, Andreeva replied: “I mean, I would say if it was up to me I would take a little bit more time.

“But that was obviously not the best decision because I also had to try to prepare my best for the grass season. But it is what it is.

“I’m always excited to play tournaments. Even if I had not a lot of time off after Paris, I was still excited to come to grass.

“Because even though my relationship with grass is like on and off, I still like to come to London, to Germany, to play tournaments. So I wouldn’t change anything.”

In her next match at the Canadian Open, Andreeva will take on 30th seed and home hope Leylah Fernandez.
