The first big spoiler for Magic: The Gathering’s first set of 2027 just came from the most unlikely of sources: a schedule for MagicCon Detroit. The Ticketed Play schedule, still live on the MagicCon Detroit website under the “Leagues” category, lists five events, each linked to a different creature type: Humans, Merfolk, Sharks, Decalids, and Desolators.

While some of these types were expected, this is the first potential confirmation for some, and for the ones we’re unfamiliar with, each event includes a handy mini-description that hints at what to expect.

Nauctis Is Bringing Humans, Merfolk, & Plenty Of Tentacles

Given that there is going to be an unusually long gap between when Star Trek releases and the start of previews for Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, at least by 2026 standards, we weren’t expecting to learn anything substantial about the first set of 2027 until the new year. It just so happens that MagicCon Detroit had other ideas, as the Ticketed Play schedule has revealed five separate events, each one dedicated to a creature type from Nauctis.

  • Humans
  • Merfolk
  • Sharks
  • Decalids
  • Desolators

While we’re more than familiar with three of these types, and we’ve even seen on some of the early key art for the sets that Merfolk, Sharks, and Humans would be part of the Nauctis plane. Decalids and Desolators, however, are new to Magic, but thankfully, the event descriptions give us a small hint of what to expect. For Decalids, it states, “Tentacles unite. With superior arm quantity and quality, we’re sure to get to the bottom of the Sunken Realms.” This seems fairly straightforward and likely houses octopuses, squids, and other tentacled sea creatures.

As for Desolators, we have the following description: “Life in the Abyss isn’t always easy, but if we’re already acclimated to the dark of the deep, discovering the Sunken Realms first shouldn’t be an issue.” This suggests these will be the set’s black mana creatures, but it offers no specific descriptors, which could mean new subtypes are coming, or that it’s intentional to avoid giving away exactly what to expect from Desolators.

Magic: The Gathering – 2027 Release Schedule

Following the Reality Fracture panel at MagicCon Amsterdam, we know exactly what 2027 looks like for MTG, including all sets and big events.

A Proven Track Record Of Accuracy

It’s absolutely worth noting that in two previous instances, both at MagicCon Atlanta and Las Vegas, similar League events went live and revealed the Strixhaven and Hexhaven colleges that would be featured heavily in Reality Fracture and Secrets of Strixhaven.

These events aren’t intended to be a spoiler for the new sets, but the information needs to be in place for attendees who want to take part in events, so it just happens to act as a mini spoiler, but it’s not like any cards have been revealed or that there’s further information about the lore of the set. It does, however, just lend credence to the fact that these are legitimate and will be real creature types associated with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. They may also indicate that these will be draft archetypes to build around when the set launches, although we’re missing key information such as the primary color identities of each creature to say that for sure.
