A Connor Hellebuyck trade to the Edmonton Oilers remains unlikely, but one NHL analyst thinks it cannot be completely ruled out.
Sportsnet’s Frank Seravalli explored the possibility as Edmonton deals with early concerns surrounding Tristan Jarry. Seravalli wrote, “If the Oilers continue to reel in goal — Tuesday’s opener made Frederik Andersen’s December debut feel a long way off — could they consider making a play for Hellebuyck?”

The question comes after Jarry allowed six goals on 23 shots during Edmonton’s 6-5 overtime loss to Vancouver.

Meanwhile, Hellebuyck remains in a standoff with the Winnipeg Jets after requesting a trade. He was suspended without pay after failing to report to training camp.
Seravalli noted that Hellebuyck’s preference is to continue his career in the United States. That makes a move to Edmonton complicated before any trade package is considered.

Seravalli explained why Edmonton would face significant challenges even if the Oilers become interested.
“Jarry would be only one part of the puzzle that is complicated in both cap and player capital; Edmonton is short on both,” Seravalli wrote.
Jarry carries a $5.375 million annual cap hit through 2027-28. Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million cap hit through 2030-31. Edmonton would therefore need to create additional salary-cap room while offering enough assets to satisfy Winnipeg. The Oilers also would need Jarry to waive his trade protection. That could become another major hurdle in negotiations.
Seravalli pointed to another factor that could change the situation. Winnipeg has time to wait for the right offer while Hellebuyck continues losing salary during his suspension.

“Time is certainly a variable worth watching in this standoff,” Seravalli wrote.

Edmonton’s goaltending situation could also evolve. Devon Levi provides another option, while Frederik Andersen remains sidelined with an injury. A prolonged Jarry slump could increase pressure on Edmonton’s front office. However, the financial and trade complications make a Hellebuyck deal difficult.
Seravalli ultimately described the possibility clearly, saying, “It’s not impossible but a real longshot that we see Hellebuyck suit up for a Canadian club again.”

So, for Edmonton, the next few weeks could determine whether the idea remains theoretical or becomes a serious trade discussion.
