The Persona series has grown to a monolithic scale over the years, with the wave of recent critical successes pushing the game far beyond its original status as a cult-classic JRPG. Despite already having two new games on the horizon for fans to look forward to with Persona 4 Revival and the briefly teased Persona 6, one of the series’ creators has shared an incredibly promising update on what’s next for the beloved RPG series.
As initially spotted by PCGamer, the Persona producer Kazuhisa Wada recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of getting remakes for the first two Persona games during an interview with GamerBraves, which offers a glimmer of hope for fans of the original games in the series.
An Update We’ve Been Waiting Years To Hear
Despite the interview being primarily focused on the upcoming release of Persona 4 Revival and several of the biggest changes or new features coming to the highly anticipated remake, the article ends with Kazuhisa Wada being asked if fans could expect remakes for the first two games in the series now that both 3 and 4 have full-blown remakes.
While the Persona producer didn’t give an official confirmation one way or the other on behalf of the studio itself, Wada stated that “personally, I think it’s something we should definitely do,” before immediately following up by saying, “I think we have to do it.”
Although this isn’t exactly the first time the Persona producer has expressed interest in revisiting the original two Persona games, the wording this time around sounds far more determined than the 2024 GameSpot interview, where Wada said, “It’s not on my schedule right now. I would like to do it someday.”
Given just how massive the critical and financial reception has been to the Persona series in recent years thanks to Persona 5 and the newer remakes introducing a new generation of fans to the series, more remakes would be a surefire way to keep the momentum of the series going.
Adapting The Original Persona Games Pose Some Unique Challenges
Although the idea of even more Persona remakes sounds absolutely fantastic on paper, the original two games in the series have a far darker tone than the later entries in the series, while also lacking several of the foundations that would be needed for the more modern life-sim elements to flourish.
Aside from some controversial subject matter, Persona 1 and 2 also take place on far shorter timelines than the later games in the series, with the first entry occurring over the course of about a single week. With so many differences between the tone and gameplay mechanics of the first two Persona games, the developers at Atlus will have a difficult task ahead of them if they do end up going through with additional remakes.
All this also relies on the assumption that Atlus even goes through with remaking the first two Persona games at all, as we still have no confirmation that the studio has plans to make more remakes after Persona 4 Revival, despite a clear desire from producers like Kazuhisa Wada. Regardless of how accurate it is to the original, however, we’re still eager to see what the series has in store for players after the long-overdue release of Persona 6.
