The Fantasy Cup returns to Pokemon Go‘s Battle League in its Ultra League Edition. If you want to climb the ranks, you’ll need a team that can handle the format’s powerful meta, so here are our top picks.
Alongside the standard Great, Ultra, and Master Leagues, Niantic‘s game regularly rotates special Cups to give the popular limited-time format a different spin, keeping PvP feeling fresh.
The Fantasy Cup is one of the most unique, limiting battles to Dragon, Steel, and Fairy-type creatures with a 2,500 CP cap, creating a compact but highly competitive metagame in Pokemon Go.
Whether you’re relying on heavy hitters, versatile picks, or defensive staples, choosing the right lineup is key. So, we’ve rounded up the best Pokemon and movesets to help you dominate the Fantasy Cup: Ultra League Edition.
Best team for the Pokemon Go Fantasy Cup: Ultra League Edition
One of the best team combinations for this Fantasy Cup includes Turtonator, Mimikyu, and Primarina, as they are some of the strongest Pokemon with wide coverage.
Another team that players could try out is Cobalion, Galarian Weezing, and Sylveon.
However, as with the rest of the Go Battle League, it’s hard to say what a ‘best team’ looks like because you’ll never know what Pokemon you’re going up against. You can have a very solid team, but a lot of it comes down to type combinations.
Still, there are a few that can perform well in most situations, which we’ve listed below alongside their optimal movesets and weaknesses.
Best Fantasy Cup: Ultra League Edition Pokemon
Doublade (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Moves: Sacred Sword and Gyro Ball
- Type: Steel/Ghost
- Resistances: Normal, Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Psychic, Rock, Steel, and Fighting
- Weaknesses: Dark, Fire, Ghost, and Ground
Doublade has one of the best type combinations by boasting the Steel typing, as it gives this strange-looking Pokemon twelve resistances.
However, you must use the right moveset to exploit its advantages, and that includes teaching it Shadow Claw as its Fast Move. It will generate a lot of energy early on, unlocking your Charged Moves. Use Sacred Sword to expand your coverage and bait the opponent’s shields to leave them defenseless, and Gyro Ball to deal good Steel-type damage.
Steelix (XL)
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Thunder Fang
- Charged Moves: Psychic Fangs and Earthquake
- Type: Steel/Ground
- Resistances: Poison, Rock, Electric, Steel, Psychic, Normal, Flying, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, Ground, and Water
Steelix, like every other Steel-type Pokemon, has an incredible amount of resistances, which is always wonderful to have. It also has a really good Defense, so it can be either used as a lead or a switch, as it will endure the damage.
As a lead, Steelix can push the enemies’ shields by spamming Thunder Fang, a very fast move with heavy damage. Moreover, both Charged Moves are cheap and fast, and can decrease the opponent’s Defense stat by 20% (Psychic Fangs) while targeting different types with a nuke (Earthquake).
Orthworm (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Mud Slap
- Charged Moves: Rock Tomb and Earthquake
- Type: Steel
- Resistances: Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Normal, Psychic, Rock, and Steel
- Weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, and Ground
Orthworm is a bulky Steel-type that leans heavily on its incredible list of resistances to outlast opponents. While it’s not the fastest option, its ability to tank damage and hit back with strong Ground-type attacks makes it a solid defensive pick.
Mud Slap is the ideal Fast Move, dealing consistent damage while building energy at a steady pace. Rock Tomb provides useful coverage and can lower the opponent’s Attack, helping Orthworm win longer matchups, while Earthquake is the heavy-hitting finisher that can deal massive damage once shields are down.
Melmetal
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Thunder Shock
- Charged Moves: Double Iron Bash and Dynamic Punch
- Type: Steel
- Resistances: Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Normal, Psychic, Rock, and Steel
- Weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, and Ground
Melmetal is a bulky Steel-type that combines excellent defensive typing with one of the fastest energy-generating movesets in the game. Its long list of resistances allows it to comfortably switch into many common threats while constantly pressuring opponents with frequent Charged Moves.
Thunder Shock is the ideal Fast Move thanks to its exceptional energy generation, letting Melmetal reach its Charged Moves very quickly. Double Iron Bash is the primary STAB attack, offering reliable damage and shield pressure, while Dynamic Punch provides valuable coverage against Steel, Rock, and Ice-types, making Melmetal a consistent threat throughout a battle.
Forretress (Shadow XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Volt Switch
- Charged Moves: Rock Tomb and Earthquake
- Type: Bug/Steel
- Resistances: Poison, Grass, Steel, Psychic, Normal, Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Fire
Forretress is a solid choice for any team as it boasts numerous useful resistances, and it’s only weak to one type (Fire), which is not being played a lot during this season. Plus, it has a great Defense stat.
Bug-type moves are not good at all in Pokemon Go, so use Volt Switch as the Fast Move to expand the coverage and deal decent damage.
For the Charged Move, use Rock Tomb to decrease your opponent’s Attack stat and bait their shields. Then you can finish them up with Earthquake, a solid Ground-type nuke that saves you from your only weakness.
Zygarde (Complete Forme)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Moves: Crunch and Earthquake
- Type: Dragon/Ground
- Resistances: Poison, Rock, Fire, and Electric
- Weaknesses: Ice, Dragon, and Fairy
With a super bulky HP stat and a great balance between resistance and damage, Zygarde is one of the most desirable creatures in Pokemon Go since it debuted in July 2023.
Not only is this Pokemon incredibly difficult to take down, but it is the perfect counter for the many Dragon-type creatures going around this rank. More so, its ideal moveset deals plenty of damage with both Dragon Tail and Earthquake, while Crunch can help with your strategy as it baits shields.
Corviknight (Shadow XL)
NIANTIC/DEXERTO- Fast Move: Sand Attack
- Charged Moves: Air Cutter and Payback
- Type: Flying/Steel
- Resistances: Bug, Grass, Poison, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Psychic, Steel, and Ground
- Weaknesses: Electric and Fire
Like most Steel-type Pokemon, one of Corviknight’s advantages is the many resistances it has. That, along with its very good Defense and Stamina stats, makes this a very difficult creature to take down.
Even though it’s the only Fast Move that doesn’t benefit from STAB, Sand Attack offers great coverage and has a very fast energy gain.
As for the Charged Moves, Air Cutter is quite spammy, so it can help you take down the opponent’s shields. Plus, it benefits from STAB and has a 30% chance of boosting your Attack stat by 25%. Payback, on the other hand, is a coverage nuke all trainers using Corviknight should have as a secondary choice.
Registeel (XL)
Niantic / The Pokemon Company- Fast Move: Lock-On
- Charged Moves: Flash Cannon and Focus Blast
- Type: Steel
- Resistances: Poison, Normal, Flying, Rock, Bug, Steel, Grass, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, and Fairy
- Weaknesses: Fire, Ground, and Fighting
Registeel is one of the bulkiest creatures in the game, using its incredible defenses and fast energy generation to outlast opponents. Its Steel typing grants it an impressive number of resistances, allowing it to comfortably wall many common threats and control the pace of battle.
Lock-On is the ideal Fast Move thanks to its unmatched energy generation, enabling Registeel to reach its Charged Moves extremely quickly. Flash Cannon serves as the primary STAB attack, dealing heavy Steel-type damage, while Focus Blast provides crucial coverage against opposing Steel-types and other opponents that resist Flash Cannon.
Galarian Weezing (Shadow XL)
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Fairy Wind
- Charged Moves: Brutal Swing and Overheat
- Type: Poison/Fairy
- Resistances: Fighting, Dragon, Bug, Grass, Fairy, and Dark
- Weaknesses: Ground, Psychic, and Steel
Galarian Weezing not only sports a unique dual Poison/Fairy type combination but also has access to a versatile move pool that includes Dark and Fire attacks. This way, it can target Fighting, Dragon, Dark, Psychic, Ghost, Grass, Ice, Bug, and even Steel, which Galarian Weezing is weak against.
Fairy Wind is the preferred Fast Move thanks to its outstanding energy generation, helping Galarian Weezing reach its Charged Moves quickly. Brutal Swing is the main spam move, providing reliable coverage against Ghost and Psychic-types, while Overheat acts as a devastating nuke that can heavily punish Steel-types and other opponents once shields are down.
Primarina
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Waterfall
- Charged Moves: Disarming Voice and Hydro Cannon
- Type: Water/Fairy
- Resistances: Dragon, Water, Ice, Fire, Fighting, Dark, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Electric, Grass, and Poison
Primarina’s type combination offers the Water Starter from the Alola region many useful resistances for this League, including Dragon, Water, and even Bug.
Both Fast Moves – Waterfall and Charm – are incredibly good choices with high STAB damage, though low energy generation. The only difference between them is their coverage, so this time around, go with Waterfall for a better synergy with the other moves.
For the Charged Move, Hydro Cannon is the way to go for a cheap option to bait the target’s shields while also making up for the low energy generation from the Fast Moves. For more coverage, use Disarming Voice, as it benefits from STAB too and is relatively cheap.
Giratina Altered Forme
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Moves: Dragon Claw and Shadow Sneak
- Type: Ghost/Dragon
- Resistances: Normal, Fighting, Bug, Electric, Fire, Grass, Poison, and Water
- Weaknesses: Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, and Ice
Giratina Altered Forme is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in PvP, combining incredible durability with a wide range of useful resistances. Its ability to absorb damage while steadily wearing opponents down makes it one of the most reliable picks in any format where it’s allowed.
Shadow Claw is the preferred Fast Move thanks to its excellent energy generation and strong STAB damage. Dragon Claw serves as the main spam move, applying constant shield pressure, while Shadow Sneak provides a stronger Ghost-type attack to hit Psychic and Ghost-types for super effective damage once shields are down.
Cobalion
Niantic / The Pokemon Company- Fast Move: Double Kick
- Charged Moves: Sacred Sword and Iron Head
- Type: Steel/Fighting
- Resistances: Bug, Dark, Dragon, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Rock, and Steel
- Weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, and Ground
Cobalion is a well-rounded Steel/Fighting-type that combines excellent defensive typing with fast, reliable Charged Move pressure. Its long list of resistances allows it to comfortably switch into many common attacks while consistently threatening opponents in return.
Double Kick is the ideal Fast Move thanks to its outstanding energy generation, allowing Cobalion to reach its Charged Moves very quickly. Sacred Sword is the main STAB attack, dealing efficient Fighting-type damage for a low energy cost, while Iron Head provides valuable Steel-type coverage to threaten Fairy, Ice, and Rock-types that resist Sacred Sword.
Galarian Stunfisk (XL)
Niantic / The Pokemon Company- Fast Move: Mud Shot
- Charged Moves: Rock Slide and Earthquake
- Type: Ground/Steel
- Resistances: Poison, Rock, Electric, Fairy, Flying, Bug, Steel, Normal, Psychic, and Dragon
- Weaknesses: Fire, Water, Ground, and Fighting
Galarian Stunfisk is one of the most reliable defensive creatures in PvP thanks to its exceptional typing, impressive bulk, and wide range of resistances. It excels at controlling battles by consistently outlasting opponents while applying steady Charged Move pressure.
Mud Shot is the preferred Fast Move thanks to its outstanding energy generation, allowing Galarian Stunfisk to reach its Charged Moves very quickly. Rock Slide is the main spam move, providing consistent coverage and shield pressure, while Earthquake serves as the heavy-hitting Ground-type finisher that can deal massive damage once shields are down.
Mimikyu (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Moves: Shadow Sneak and Play Rough
- Type: Ghost/Fairy
- Resistances: Fighting, Bug, Dragon, and Normal
- Weaknesses: Ghost and Steel
Mimikyu is a tricky Ghost/Fairy-type that combines a fantastic defensive typing with strong neutral coverage. Its unique set of resistances allows it to comfortably handle Dragon, Fighting, and Normal types while threatening opponents with both Ghost and Fairy-type damage.
Shadow Claw is the preferred Fast Move thanks to its excellent energy generation and solid STAB damage. Shadow Sneak serves as the cheaper Charged Move for consistent pressure and shield baiting, while Play Rough is the heavy-hitting Fairy-type attack that can deal significant damage to Dark, Dragon, and Fighting-types once shields are down.
Turtonator (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Incinerate
- Charged Moves: Dragon Claw and Overheat
- Type: Fire/Dragon
- Resistances: Fire, Grass, Bug, Electric, and Steel
- Weaknesses: Dragon, Ground, and Rock
Turtonator thrives in the Fantasy Cup thanks to its dual typing, which hard counters popular choices like Forretress, Dedenne, Togekiss, and Corviknight. Plus, it has access to incredible Charged Moves that target both Fairy and Dragon enemies.
Incinerate has high power and good energy generation, so use it as your Fast Move. Then, add Overheat as your Charged Move – It is a very cheap nuke. Finish up your moveset with Dragon Claw, a strong and fast move that benefits from STAB.
