The Pokemon Company has announced end-of-service plans for Pokemon Unite. The MOBA, which launched in 2021, will be shuttered and its servers taken offline in 2027, rendering the game entirely unplayable outside of a library feature that players will be able to use to look back on their records.
The End Is Nigh For Pokemon Unite
The Pokemon Company published an update this morning announcing the news that, on March 23, 2027, support for Pokemon Unite will come to an end. This applies to both the mobile and Switch versions of the multiplayer-only game. The game will remain playable, functional, and supported until that date.
As with any game that goes through this process, there will be stages to Unite’s shutdown. The first stage is removing the ability to buy its in-game currency, Aeos Gems. That has happened effective immediately, as selling currency for a game that is closing down wouldn’t be a good look.
Even though you can no longer buy Aeos Gems, if you have any leftover, those can still be used from now until the end of service next year. The same applies to anyone who has an active Unite Club membership. You can no longer subscribe to Unite Club, but those already signed up will continue to benefit from it for the remainder of their subscription, or until the game is shut down. Auto-renewal has also been switched off.
One More Big Event, To Say Goodbye
There will be one more in-game event held, seemingly so that players can say goodbye to the game. The event will begin on November 12 and run through until Unite’s closure. Players will have the opportunity to unlock licenses and holowear from throughout Unite’s five-year history during the event. The planned Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo Competitive Tournament will also still take place, with qualifiers kicking off on December 5.
Once Unite is shut down on March 23, 2027, the only element of the game that will remain accessible is its newly announced library feature. The library will allow players to look back on their Unite records and in-game content, even after service has ended. You will be able to complete the data download required for post-shutdown library access on the same day as Unite’s final event begins on November 12.
The library will provide ways to view records and content only. Other than that, from March 23, 2027, Unite will be entirely unplayable. No online servers and no offline mode. Unite players were fearing this day might come after it was announced that the game would no longer be part of the World Championship series in 2027. It’s unclear how big Unite’s player base is five years in, but clearly, it has reached a point where TiMi Studios and The Pokemon Company no longer believe it’s worth supporting.
