A real-life “Hobbit House” built into a hillside in Huron, Ohio has hit the market for $850,000.
The 2,100-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom earth home sits at 10510 Mudbrook Road on 7.93 acres along the Huron River, with roughly 250 feet of water frontage. It was built of concrete and covered with dirt in 1977.
Inside is nothing like Middle-earth
Real estate account Zillow Gone Wild featured the property on Instagram in August 2026, and it quickly split opinion.
Roughly 90% of the structure is covered in dirt and living vegetation, including ivy and myrtle, and the owners mow the grass on their own roof with a standard lawnmower.
Inside, the decor leans more camping and fishing retailer than fantasy hideaway, with a taxidermy bear among the standout pieces. The open-concept kitchen and living area also features a wood-burning fireplace.
The property includes an attached two-car garage, an on-site security system, and both public water and well access, alongside a gazebo, a log cabin, a pole shed, and a workshop. Direct river access means boats can travel down the Huron River to Lake Erie in around 30 minutes.
The listing pitches the earth-sheltered design as offering greater privacy, storm-resistant construction, and potentially lower energy costs than a traditional home.
The original owner had planned to build a conventional house before opting for the earth-sheltered design instead. The sellers previously listed the same property for $900,000 back in 2023.
Zillow Gone Wild has surfaced plenty of unusual listings before. Earlier this year, a Colorado home went viral after its listing revealed the buyer would have to “remove” the current tenant themselves once the sale went through.
