Renato Moicano has taken the high road after suffering a controversial loss in the UFC Vegas 123 headliner.
If you saw highlights of Saturday’s main event, you may have only caught the moment Tom Nolan was able to finish Moicano for the biggest win of his career. On the surface, it was a thrilling finish and a well deserved “Performance of the Night” bonus for the rising 26-year-old. Where the controversy lies, however, is referee Dan Miragliotta’s call that directly led to the fight-ending sequence.
With Moicano in a dominant position and looking for a rear-naked choke, Miragliotta decided it was the right time to stand the main event fighters back up. Nolan took full advantage and stopped Moicano upon the reset. Many fighters including Daniel Cormier, who was calling the fight on commentary, took Miragliotta to task for the blunder.
As Miragliotta continues to take heat, Moicano isn’t about to pile up. In a video statement posted on his YouTube channel, Moicano appeared to be more frustrated with himself for not doing a better job in the fight (via MMAFighting.com).
“All respect to Tom Nolan, an excellent guy,” Moicano said. “I thought I was going to beat him because I had watched [his] videos. I thought I would take his back very easily, and I thought I would be making another video today, a celebration video. … We make plans, we want things to happen, but things don’t always happen the way we want them to. What am I going to do? Get angry at the world? Curse out the referee? Start a war?”
Moicano is simply ready to move forward instead of bashing Miragliotta.
“Life goes on. There will be other fights. I will get better. The whole point of this video is to tell you one thing: it’s either win or improve. I have a lot to improve on,” Moicano said.
Moicano has now gone 1-3 in his last four outings, which is a tough stretch given that he plans to fight out his UFC contract and test free agency in the future. He’ll look to overcome his setbacks and start to build some momentum.
