Despite Resident Evil fans being weird about it and all but scaring Zach Creggar away from ever making another video game movie again before it had even been released, the Resident Evil movie has been doing big business at the box office. So big that it will end its theatrical run as one of the ten highest-grossing video game movies ever.
Resident Evil Movie Hits $400 Million
According to Box Office Mojo, Resident Evil has now hit $400 million at the worldwide box office. Technically it’s $1,498 short, but in terms of keeping records, even if no one were to ever buy another ticket to see the movie again, that number is historically going to be rounded up to an even $400 million.
Resident Evil is still being shown in theaters too, so it will hit that number. It might have even hit the big 4-0-0 by the time you read this.
Not only is $400 million a huge number by almost any metric, but it’s a massive win for the Resident Evil adaptation since the film reportedly had a budget of just $75 million. That big new box office number means the film is not only the highest-grossing Resident Evil movie ever – it achieved that a long time ago – but one of the top ten most successful big-screen video game adaptations of all time.
You’re Next, Sonic 2
It has put a significant gap between it and The Angry Birds Movie too, which can no longer claim to be a top ten adaptation. Even if it were to get a very unlikely re-release, I can’t see Red and his feathered friends pulling in an additional $50 million to get the movie based on the mobile game back in that top ten.
Other video game movies that now rank lower than Resident Evil when it comes to box office numbers include Five Nights at Freddy’s, Pokemon: The First Movie, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Just the first Sonic movie, for now, although it seems like Resident Evil will come for Sonic 2 pretty soon. The Blue Blur’s first sequel is currently ninth, having ended its run at $405 million, so not much to do for Resident Evil should it want to rank higher in that top ten.
There really has been no better time than right now to be a Resident Evil fan. Not only does the series now have a movie that most now admit does the games justice more than any of the Resi movies that came before it, but Resident Evil Requiem is probably going to be a contender for Game of the Year, and after hugely successful remakes of Resident Evils 2, 3, and 4, Code Veronica is up next.
