The new look LA Lakers got another chance to build chemistry ahead of the new season with a warmup game against the Warriors.
The 89-101 loss for the LA Lakers was not the story. The big takeaway for JJ Redick‘s team was new signing Walker Kessler making his first appearance.
Kessler was acquired in a trade from the Utah Jazz in the offseason, and the Lakers’ success will depend on the center making an impact, and managing to stay healthy.
This was Kessler’s first game since October 31 last year, and getting back on the court was a major step forward. The impact he made was hailed by Lakers’ free agency signing Sandro Mamukelashvili.
Speaking postgame, Mamukelashvili explained how impressed he was by Kessler, commenting: “It was amazing. He’s an amazing rim protector. He’s so tough, physical, he plays hard. It was amazing having him there.
“It was so much easier to rebound. He brings a lot of impact. Great first game and I’m sure he is going to get better from here.”
Kessler played 16 minutes and the Lakers were +15 during the time he was on the court. He grabbed nine rebounds during that spell.

Sandro Mamukelashvili also a plus
Sandro Mamukelashvili came off the bench and played 21 minutes total. The Lakers were +6 during his spell on the court.
He added: “I play instinctual. Whatever is best for the team, or whatever the defense gives you.”
In total he scored 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and provided two assists, and clearly liked the opportunities he got to share the court with Kessler.
The new look Lakers will take a little time to gel, but this was an important step forward.
