Serena Williams‘ last competitive match was at the 2022 U.S. Open when she lost in three sets against Ajla Tomljanović in the third round.
She had previously beaten Danka Kovinić and Anett Kontaveit, who was seeded No. 2 for the tournament, in the earlier rounds in front of raucous crowds at Flushing Meadows.
Before the tournament, Williams had said that she wanted to “evolve away” from tennis and move towards “other things that are important to me.”
She has since grown her business portfolio and gave birth to her second child, Adira River, in August 2023, but never entirely ruled out returning to the sport.
