A few days ago, tennis fans were up in arms.

Stan Wawrinka had not received a wildcard for the US Open Men’s Singles event, despite his looming retirement at the end of this year.

Tennis fans voiced their frustrations as the last wildcard spot was handed to American Patrick Kypson, with one onlooker branding the decision as ‘beyond shameful’.

Wawrinka has now received a wildcard for the event following Kypson’s injury-induced withdrawal.

How would you change the wild card system as Stan Wawrinka finally gets US Open call-up?

About time!

Consequently, Wawrinka is about to make unprecedented tennis history.

Stan Wawrinka’s piece of tennis history

After receiving a wildcard for the US Open, Wawrinka is set to play in the main draws of all four Grand Slam events this year.

As reported by OptaAce, Wawrinka is now set to become the first player aged 40 or older in the Open Era to play in the Men’s Singles main draw of all four Grand Slam events in a single season.

The Swiss maestro, who won the US Open title in 2016, will find out his first-round opponent in Flushing Meadows when the US Open Men’s Singles draw is published later on Thursday.

Wawrinka last competed at the event in 2024, losing in the first round to Italian player Mattia Bellucci.

Stan Wawrinka’s Grand Slam results this year

  • Australian Open – third round [lost to Taylor Fritz]
  • Roland Garros – first round [lost to Jesper de Jong]
  • Wimbledon – first round [lost to Matteo Berrettini]
  • US Open – ?

The Swiss star did not compete in the 2025 US Open as he was denied a wildcard for the main draw.

The US Open finally make the right decision

Let’s call it for what it is: the US Open’s initial decision not to award Stan Wawrinka a wildcard was poor.

It was no way to honour their former champion – an individual who has given so much to the sport of tennis and inspired so many people across the globe.

However, tournament organisers have finally come to the right decision; better late than never!

Who will win this year’s US Open men’s singles event?

Vote now!

Wawrinka will make his final US Open appearance 22 years after making his debut in the qualifying rounds.

In 2004, the Swiss youngster defeated Michel Kratochvil in the first round of qualifying, before losing to Takao Suzuki.

Wawrinka won his first main draw matches at the event in 2005, beating Rajeev Ram and Mariano Puerta.

He then lost to Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu.
