Stephon Castle followed up a strong rookie year with a 23-point Game 3, and the comparisons got enormous in a hurry. He is being mentioned alongside Magic Johnson and LeBron James as a rookie thriving deep in the postseason. The performance is real. The names attached to it are running ahead of the resume.

Castle’s Game 3 put him in rare statistical company, as he and Wembanyama became the first pair of teammates age 22 or younger to each score 20 or more points in an NBA Finals game, per ESPN, fueling talk of Castle as a generational postseason rookie.

What’s true about the hype

Castle has been genuinely excellent. His size has bothered Brunson and Josh Hart on the defensive end all series, and his willingness to take big shots on the road in his first Finals is exactly the poise the Spurs lacked in the first two games.

Being effective as a rookie at this stage is historically rare, and the company he’s keeping in the record books isn’t a fluke of a single hot night.

Where the comparison overreaches

Magic won Finals MVP as a rookie. LeBron carried franchises out of the lottery by his second season. Those are two of the highest bars in the sport’s history, and one excellent Finals game, however historic the box-score pairing, doesn’t put Castle on that tier.

He is a terrific young complementary star playing next to a generational center, which is a wonderful thing to be and a very different thing from the players he’s being measured against.

The verdict

Castle is a legitimate rising star and one of the best young guards in the league, and the Spurs would not be in this series without him. Hanging Magic and LeBron on him is the kind of recency-driven leap that sets a 21-year-old up to be called a disappointment for not becoming an inner-circle Hall of Famer. Enjoy the player he is. The comparisons are a burden he hasn’t asked for and doesn’t need.
