After clinching the 11th title of his career in Washington, Taylor Fritz suffered an opening-round exit at the Canadian Open.

Fritz lost to Thiago Agustin Tirante in his first match at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, falling in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

The American’s clash with the Argentine came just two days after he overcame 19-year-old star Rafael Jodar in the Washington Open final.

Fritz was one of many big-hitters to lose in the early stages of the Canadian Open, joining Alexander Zverev, Jack Draper, Flavio Cobolli, Alex de Minaur and Daniil Medvedev.

A week after his defeat, Fritz revealed he was not physically ready to feature in Montreal.

Taylor Fritz speaks after losing in the first round of the Canadian Open

In an interview with Tennis TV, Fritz said: “I’d much rather win a tournament one week at the expense of losing the next week rather than kind of just do alright every week. It’s more rewarding for the rankings.

“For me, I just wasn’t expecting my body to feel as bad as it did when I got there because it felt pretty good all the way through Washington.

“I think mentally, once I knew that the tournament was over, my body was just allowed to fall apart. So yeah, not the best.

Who is your pick to win the US Open men’s singles title?

“I had to cut my practice short the day before. To be honest I probably should have pulled out part way through my match.

“I had an injury that really flared up. Not my knee. I don’t really want to talk about it. Just really inflamed, really irritated and yeah, I shouldn’t have played, to be honest.”

Taylor Fritz describes the conditions at the Cincinnati Open

With the Canadian Open loss behind him, Fritz will now set his sights on the Cincinnati Open.

“I took a couple days off because I needed to cool down the parts that were really inflamed,” said Fritz ahead of the second Masters event of the North American hard-court swing.

“I only hit yesterday for the first time. It’s feeling alright. The two practices I’ve had here have been so windy that it’s tough for me to get an actual feel for the courts and conditions.

“I’m here early. I’m excited to have several days to kind of feel it out.”

Fritz is a two-time quarterfinalist at the Cincinnati Open, having reached the last-eight stage in 2022 and 2023.
