In the NBA arms race that is future draft assets, these teams enter the 2026-27 offseason with the most to offer.
One of the biggest tools in roster building is future draft assets. Not only can they organically help teams find stars through the NBA Draft, but it also allows them to use these assets in trades to bolster their roster.
Contending teams are not shy about dangling draft assets to get the players they want, while rebuilding teams try to generate as many picks as they can when they trade their valuable players.
As a result, a lot of movement of draft assets has happened over the years in the NBA. Let’s take a look at which teams control the most future draft assets in the NBA, and how that can shape their competitive future.
Brooklyn Nets have the most total picks
The Nets have the biggest collection of future draft assets with 13 first-round picks and 17 second-round picks. Most of these come from them trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks, but it also includes picks acquired in trades sending out Cam Johnson, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant.

The Nets are probably the furthest away from being a contender in the NBA despite their frontcourt of new addition Julius Randle to join Michael Porter Jr.
They still have a very young guard core headlined by No. 8 pick Mikel Brown Jr., but they’ll be hoping their assets can eventually land them a true No. 1 option to lead the franchise.
Charlotte Hornets receive a bump after LaMelo Ball trade
The Hornets just acquired an additional first-round pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the LaMelo Ball trade, also acquiring three first-round swaps, which don’t count as individual picks.
Their 11 first-round picks and 17 second-round picks give them the second-most draft assets in the NBA with 28 total picks.
The Hornets are an ascending team hoping to make a Playoff run next season, led by Kon Knueppel, but have plenty of trade ammunition to add more stars in the coming years.
They will hope they don’t need to rely on future selections with their current core, but they have the room to make multiple win-now moves to boost their postseason chances.
OKC Thunder’s impressive asset collection still stands tall
The Thunder might have defended their 2024 NBA title this season if a series of injuries hadn’t sidetracked them in the Western Conference Finals.
They should be preseason favorites heading into next season once again, as the franchise hopes to make it four straight seasons with the No. 1 seed in the West.

OKC have been the leader in future draft assets for most of the 2020s, but they’ve slid back to No. 3 with 10 first-rounders and 15 second-rounders, acquiring two more recently for Isaiah Joe.
They continue making moves to add future picks, so it’s hard to see a situation where they exhaust these reserves chasing for a star in a trade, given their roster is already arguably the best in the NBA.
