Alexandra Eala and Iga Świątek are set to do battle for the third time on the WTA Tour.

The pair, who have contested matches in Miami and Madrid, will play each other in the third round of Wimbledon.

Swiatek defeated Karolina Pliskova on Thursday, while Eala overcame the challenge of Maya Joint to advance in south-west London.

Who will reach the fourth round of Wimbledon – Alex Eala or Iga Swiatek?

What a match this could be!

Swiatek is the clear favourite heading into the contest: she is the world number three and defending Wimbledon champion.

However, Alex Eala should not be underestimated heading into the contest.

Alex Eala’s game is perfectly crafted to combat Iga Swiatek on grass courts

Over the past month, Eala has proven that she is at her very best when competing on the grass courts.

In reality, this should not be a surprise to anyone.

With her low centre of gravity, excellent counter-punching ability and first-strike tactical set-up, Eala’s game is tailor-made for grass courts.

In contrast, Iga Swiatek performs at her best on the slow, high-bouncing European clay courts.

Of course, Swiatek is capable of playing excellent grass-court tennis, as demonstrated by her triumph at Wimbledon 12 months ago.

However, Swiatek is a player that enjoys having adequate time to set herself before playing a shot.

If Eala can take this luxury away from Swiatek on Saturday, she has every chance of emerging victorious.

Alex Eala’s Wimbledon campaign so far

  • 2026 R1: defeated Renata Zarazua 6-2, 6-1
  • 2026 R2: defeated Maya Joint 3-6, 6-2, 6-0
  • 2026 R3: will play Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek’s form has been inconsistent throughout this year

Swiatek’s year on the Tour has been tumultuous to say the least.

The Polish star has struggled to locate her best form, losing to a variety of lower-ranked players.

Swiatek attempted to reverse her woes in March when she parted ways with coach Wim Fissette and hired Francisco Roig.

The Pole’s results have barely improved since then.

Of course, Swiatek played very well to defeat Karolina Pliskova so comfortably on Thursday afternoon.

In actuality, this result will do little to calm the nerves of Swiatek’s fans.

Throughout this year, one good performance by Swiatek has been shortly followed by a miserable showing.

Some of Iga Swiatek’s surprising losses on the WTA Tour this year

  • Maria Sakkari in Qatar
  • Magda Linette in Miami
  • Ann Li in Madrid
  • Emma Navarro in Bad Homburg

One would not be surprised if the same situation occurs on Saturday.

Alex Eala’s fans will likely play a big role

Eala’s fans can be found in their numbers at almost every tennis event she participates in.

As has been customary throughout this year, Eala’s fans have been raucously cheering on the youngster during her matches at Wimbledon.

Eala has spoken on many occasions about how important her fans are to her success on the court.

“I know how notoriously difficult it is to get tickets to this event,” Eala said after her first-round victory in south-west London.

“To have what I would call a full house of Filipinos is amazing.

“I never would have thought that at Wimbledon I would have a home crowd. Super thankful, and I really enjoyed it.

“The atmosphere of the game really changes when there are a lot of people cheering for me or for my opponent. I am happy when there are a lot of Filipinos.”

Will Alex Eala ever win a Grand Slam title?

The influence of the Filipino fans on Eala’s performances cannot be understated.

As Eala noted earlier this week, the ‘atmosphere’ of a tennis match shifts depending on the crowd’s preferences over who to support.

If the Filipino contingent can generate another rambunctious atmosphere on Saturday, they could spur Eala on to victory.
