Unlicensed Gambling Sponsorships Face UK Ban Push

If you have ever watched a Counter-Strike stream and noticed the same crypto casino logo splashed across a Premier League sleeve, you already understand why this fight matters beyond football. Entain, the parent company of Ladbrokes and Coral, has renewed its call for the UK government to immediately ban sports sponsorship deals with unlicensed gambling operators, warning that 11 of the Premier League’s 20 clubs still hold arrangements with brands that lack a UK licence.

The names on that list will sound familiar to anyone who follows esports sponsorship deals. Stake and Shuffle, two crypto casino brands that have poured money into competitive gaming orgs and streamers over the past few years, both show up in Entain’s findings – a reminder that the same regulatory grey zone reshaping football shirts also touches the gambling-adjacent brands esports fans see on jerseys and overlays every week.

The Loophole Everyone Saw Coming

Premier League clubs voluntarily dropped gambling front-of-shirt sponsors starting with the 2026-27 season, but that ban never touched sleeves, training kits or stadium branding. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport ran a follow-up consultation from 15 July to 9 September, building on an initial review back in February, and the current expectation is that a formal ban wouldn’t kick in until August 2027 – a full extra season of runway for operators who never bothered getting licensed in the first place.

That timeline gap is exactly what Entain is trying to close, and the parallels to how regulators have tightened rules around gambling advertising and sports personalities in other contexts aren’t lost on anyone watching the space.

Eleven Clubs, One Very Public List

Entain’s count of 11 clubs is higher than the government’s own estimate of eight, according to the iGaming Business report. Sunderland just announced Shuffle, a crypto casino and sportsbook platform, as its new multi-year sleeve partner despite Shuffle holding no UK licence. Everton still carries Stake on its sleeve even though Stake pulled out of the UK market in early 2025 amid a Gambling Commission investigation into its advertising – a saga not unlike the scrutiny covered in Esports.net’s look at how regulators assess gambling ad placements. Chelsea (8XBet), Tottenham Hotspur (VSBet) and Nottingham Forest (FUN88) round out the list.

Entain is leaning on data from H2 Gambling Capital projecting UK black-market stakes nearly doubling from £17 billion in 2025 to more than £33 billion by 2028. The company’s own research also found that more than 80% of consumers can’t confidently tell licensed operators apart from unlicensed ones, which is exactly the kind of confusion a sleeve logo is designed to exploit.

Entain CEO Stella David has argued that clubs signing new deals with unlicensed operators knew the regulatory writing was on the wall, and that inconvenience shouldn’t be an excuse for delay. She’s also pushing for any ban to cover online and digital advertising, not just physical branding – a meaningful ask given the consultation reportedly found 22% of consumers who use unlicensed operators first found them through social media, against 13% via sponsorship.

That digital push is worth watching closely if you follow esports organizations, several of which have faced their own sponsorship reckonings, including the wave of scrutiny around gambling-adjacent sponsors getting banned from CS2 events. Whether the UK government moves at Entain’s preferred speed or sticks with the slower timetable, the outcome will shape how comfortable any rights-holder – football club or esports org – can be about cashing a check from a brand that skipped the licensing process entirely.
