The sequel to the 2015 narrative horror game Until Dawn was announced during tonight’s PlayStation State of Play. The project is helmed by Firesprite Games, a first-party PlayStation studio best known for Horizon: Call of the Mountain.
The trailer depicts a group of ghost hunters who appear to be living large on a scarcely populated island. Predictably, their good times are soon interrupted by an individual with murderous intent.
The official synopsis from PlayStation reads as follows, “Our cast this time is a crew of ghost hunters, the faces behind the wildly popular paranormal channel, Dead True.. Only, well… they’ve never actually seen anything supernatural. The scares they are known for are, let’s say, a little staged. But all that changes when for the very first time, they come face-to-face with real horrors and must start living up to their reputation to survive until dawn.”
As with the original—developed by Supermassive Games—a group of actors has been cast to provide their likenesses and voices to the characters. The cast features Neil Newbon (Baldur’s Gate 3) and Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things), among others.
If The Until Dawn Movie Isn’t About Until Dawn, What Is It?
Is this just a regular old horror movie, then?
In terms of continuity, the psychologist from the original game (portrayed by Peter Stormare) appears briefly at the conclusion of the trailer, suggesting the sequel occurs in the same universe as the Wendigo-infested first game.
The final line of the trailer suggests, “Everyone can live, Everyone can die,” which is always a welcome guarantee.
Until Dawn 2 Announced At State Of Play
The Until Dawn brand has potentially been damaged by the release of the critically panned film adaptation earlier this year, but that isn’t likely to hurt the appetite of fans of the genre, who have been spoiled for choice in recent years.
The original game’s developer, Supermassive, recently released The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020, which launched to mixed reviews, something that’s become typical of the series.
Until Dawn 2 is set to release sometime next year.
