What LeBron James’ top three potential landing spots say about his thinking, dream pairing in peril

LeBron James is about to make the final move of his NBA career, and three potential landing spots are emerging outside a dream pairing.

Ever since LeBron James announced he was going to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, his future has dominated discussions.

He has beaten Father Time so far and remains a very capable contributor on the court, let alone the eyeballs his presence brings on it.

As he settles on three potential landing spots, here’s what each says about his thinking-

James’ legacy was secure when he won his Cavs a title, but it is a smart coincidence that now that he’s decided to leave the Lakers, the Cavs are a competitive outfit.

Having recently signed Donovan Mitchell to a four-year, $273m contract, they are firmly in the “win now” territory.

For the last three years, this team has fallen at the Conference Finals, Semi-finals, and Semi-finals, so they need an experienced hand to get them over the line.

That is an enticing opportunity for James, who can return to his hometown and help the team over the final hump to get another ring. That’s a story too good to pass up on.

Miami Heat – Villain’s legacy turns to a hero

The Miami Heat are farther away than the Cavs in championship contention, but joining the Heat over the Cavs could be a legacy-repairing move.

When he left the Cavs for the Heat and created “The Heatles”, James left his hometown to chase a ring.

If he makes the same choice now, he’d be avoiding a championship contender in Cavs for a move back to where his first ring was.

Would he win a ring in Miami? Unlikely. But he would repair his legacy, to an extent, with the Heat offering the perfect mix of competitiveness, money, and lifestyle.

Philadelphia 76ers – Ending the title drought

James ended the Cavs’ title drought, won the Lakers their first title after years, and won a ring with the Miami Heat as well.

Cue the Philadelphia 76ers, whose last title came when James wasn’t even born (1982/83). The 76ers surpassed expectations last season by getting to the Eastern Conference Semi-finals, and if James can end that title drought, his legacy will be rock-solid.

Jaylen Brown has landed in Philadelphia, VJ Edgecombe is an exciting talent, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid are proven commodities.

The team is well-placed to take another jump next season, and if James is added to the roster, they become sneaky contenders to win it all.

(Dis)Honorable mention – Golden State Warriors

After the emergence of the top three landing spots above, the Golden State Warriors have been firmly pushed to the back of the queue.

A dream pairing with Steph Curry looked like a genuine possibility at one point, but head seems to have won out against the heart. The

Warriors are also a long shot in terms of title contention due to their brittle core, so James’ move would have been largely driven by the marketing potential instead of a sporting-minded one.

The dream pairing is in peril, but even if it had happened, the reality would have struck soon because the Warriors have just too many unknowns in their team.
