Stefanos Tsitsipas won his 13th career ATP Tour title earlier this week.

The Greek superstar, once the world number three, defeated Raphael Collignon 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to claim the title in Gstaad, Switzerland.

It was Tsitsipas’ first title since winning the Dubai Tennis Championships in February 2025.

Will Jannik Sinner still be on top?

Tsitsipas’ Swiss campaign was impressive, which proves that he made the right decision to switch coaches last month.

However, the 27-year-old has far from proven his worth as a Grand Slam contender.

What Stefanos Tsitsipas must do to be considered a Grand Slam contender once again

Tsitsipas was once a regular feature in the latter stages of Grand Slam events.

The Greek player is a two-time major finalist and a three-time Masters 1000 champion.

His high-flying campaigns have well and truly been left in the past, as demonstrated by his fall to world number 85 earlier this year.

However, the ATP Tour veteran has proven that he is on the right track after his triumph in Gstaad.

Winning any ATP Tour level event is difficult – even the 250 tournaments – and the Greek star defeated some incredible talents en route to the Swiss title, including Jerome Kym, Ignacio Buse and Arthur Rinderknech.

The results, however, do not indicate a return to Grand Slam-challenging form.

Tsitsipas needs to beat high-ranking ATP players on a more consistent basis and put a stop to his frequent early tournament exits in order to prove to tennis fans that he can consistently challenge for Grand Slam titles in the future.

  • Alexander Bublik in Madrid
  • Alex de Minaur in Miami
  • Daniil Medvedev in Doha
  • Taylor Fritz at the United Cup

He has failed to do so over the past 18 months.

He now has the opportunity to prove doubters wrong when he competes in Canada and Cincinnati later this month.

How did Stefanos Tsitsipas perform during last year’s North American swing?

Tsitsipas struggled throughout the 2025 North American hard-court swing.

He began his campaign in Montreal, where he was beaten in his first match by Australian Christopher O’Connell.

Tsitsipas then travelled south to Cincinnati, where he won his opening match against Fabian Marozsan.

The former world number three was then knocked out by Benjamin Bonzi, 7-6, 3-6, 4-6.

Tsitsipas’ woes were compounded in Winston Salem, where – despite being the number one seed – he lost his opening contest to China’s Bu Yunchaokete.

Tsitsipas concluded his North American campaign at the US Open. He defeated Alexandre Muller and then lost to Daniel Altmaier in five sets.

Consequently, Tsitsipas is defending only 73 ATP ranking points throughout this year’s North American swing.
