In our forums, one user is looking to dive deep into the world of 4-woods, looking to other members to share their uses for the club and where it fits into the bag.
@GoofySwing explained:
“I was wondering what people look for in a 4 wood IF that is your first fairway wood after your driver (no mini drivers – unless that is your main driver ?)
“For this topic 4 wood equals:
“* 4 wood
“* 3HL wood
“* 3 wood at higher loft (16-17*)
“* 5 wood at lower loft (17*)
“Do you want a large head (180-200cc)? Or a smaller head?
“Do you want something primarily for off the tee, off the fairway, or both?
“Personally, I go back and forth between a 3 wood (180cc) lofted up or a 5 wood (160cc) lofted down. I don’t like the 5 wood off the tee, but I like it better off the turf. 3 wood at standard loft isn’t good at all from the turf, but for some reason I can hit it if I loft it up 1* ok – but not as good as the 5 wood.”
Users hopped in with their own thoughts on the club, alongside the way in which @GoofySwing uses their 4-wood. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- @BobRossCT: “16.5 Tsi 2 has been hard to kick from my bag. Tbh though, I prefer a heavier shaft like I would play in a 5 wood more than anything with it. Ventus red 9x really is what made me love it. Could change heads but def prefer the heavier shaft in the 4 wood.”
- @tleader: “1” short 3 wood, lofted up.”
- @buckl: “I was all set to get a new 4 wood. Looked at the Ping 440, TM, etc. then demo’d the Ventus Blue Velocore in my Ping 410 17 degree and it was as good and better so put that in play. I like a little smaller footprint for my fairway woods. I have it turned down a degree.”
- @Dave33: “I went with a Cobra DS Adapt 3 wood, lofted to about a 3.5 wood. Chose cobra since the future fit design lets you loft up or down without making the club overly fade or draw biased at address. Use it mostly from the fairway but honestly never really understood the difference as you can tee the ball ever how you like to see it at address on the tee box.”
- Joshftw: “I wanted to love the g440 4W so much! I also play the 440 LST (with chrome tour shaft) but the 4W face is still too shallow for me as my 16-18* club is my 2nd tee club. Ended up with a qi35 core 5W which i like better off the tee and is similar to g440 4W from the turf.The g440 fw’s are excellent though. I have the 9W.”
