Of the 23 Grand Slam titles she has to her name, Serena Williams captured seven of them at the Wimbledon championships.

The American legend clinched her first crown at the All England Club back in 2002, when she beat her sister, the two-time defending champion, Venus.

Williams went back-to-back in 2003 and won consecutive Wimbledon titles again in 2009 and 2010.

After adding a fifth to her name in 2012, she triumphed in 2015 before securing her seventh title in 2016, beating Angelique Kerber to hoist a 22nd major trophy.

Williams went on to make the final twice more after that, but in 2022 she played her last-ever match at Wimbledon: a first-round exit to Harmony Tan.

Serena Williams’ loss at the 2022 Wimbledon championships

Williams had received a wildcard for Wimbledon 2022, having made a comeback to the sport after a year away due to a hamstring injury.

In the first round, she was faced with Tan, who at the time was the world number 115, competing in her first Wimbledon.

Tan and Williams swapped sets in the match before the French star emerged victorious in a third-set tiebreak after three hours and 10 minutes.

After overcoming Williams, Tan continued to impress at Wimbledon, knocking out 32nd seed Sara Sorribes and home hope Katie Boulter.

Her campaign was brought to an end when faced with 20th seed Amanda Anisimova in the fourth round, who beat Tan in straight sets.

Serena Williams’ reaction after losing to Harmony Tan in 2022

At the time of Wimbledon that year, Williams had not yet announced her retirement, which she later revealed ahead of the US Open later in the summer.

After the loss to Tan, Williams was asked if she was okay with that being her last memory at Wimbledon.

She replied: “Obviously not. You know me. Definitely not.

“But today I gave all I could do, you know, today. Maybe tomorrow I could have given more. Maybe a week ago I could have given more. But today was what I could do.

“At some point, you have to be able to be okay with that. And that’s all I can do. I can’t change time or anything, so… That’s all I could do on this particular day.”

Williams played her last match that year at the 2022 US Open, where she made the third round.
