After completing the main story in Stardew Valley, you can gain access to Ginger Island. This is a late-game addition that easily adds in about a dozen hours’ worth of content. On this tropical island, you can find new NPCs, items, and quests to complete.

With all the things happening on the island, though, it can be easy to get lost when trying to take everything in. In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about Ginger Island.

How Do You Get To Ginger Island?

Help Willy Rebuild The Boat

Though you can see the boat that’ll take you there at the back of Willy’s shop early on, Ginger Island can only be accessed by completing the Community Center in its entirety, whether you do that via traditional bundle donations or with the use of the Joja route that sees you paying for upgrades instead. Once you’ve done this, you will then need to head to the beach and help Willy with a big fetch quest.

After you’ve finished rebuilding the boat to Ginger Island in Stardew Valley, it’ll cost you 1,000g per trip to have Willy sail you out, but the fare does cover your return trip to Pelican Town as well.

Build An Island Obelisk For Free Fast Travel

If you’re tired of coughing up the gold each time you’d like to get to Ginger Island, consider investing in one of the four obelisks that the Wizard offers after you’ve finished The Goblin Problem quest for him, the Island Obelisk.

To make an Island Obelisk, you’ll need several items from Ginger Island itself, including:

Ginger Island Overview

Not all of Ginger Island will be accessible when you first visit. To unlock new areas, you may need to pay a parrot, which usually stands on a perch near the blocked area. After giving the parrot a specified amount of Golden Walnuts, you can then freely cross into the new area.

Island East

As the name implies, Island East is on the east side of the island. From the main beach, you can get here by taking a right, which leads into the Jungle.

Leo’s Hut

Within this portion of the island, you can find Leo’s Hut. This is an NPC that you can eventually help move to the valley. Within his hut, there is also a parrot that provides hints on where to find walnuts. These hints can be a bit cryptic, but they can come in handy if you aren’t sure where to look.

Gem Bird Puzzle

The Gem Birds are located to the east of the area in front of Leo’s hut. They will appear on rainy days, and when approached, they will fly off, leaving a gem behind. The gem will then need to be added onto the correct pedestal, and the process needs to be repeated until all pedestals are full.

Island West

The first time you venture over toward the direction of Island West, to the left of where you land at the docks, a giant turtle will be blocking the way. After paying ten Golden Walnuts, he will move and unlock a second farm for you on Ginger Island.

The Island Farm

The first thing you’ll see after clearing the turtle out of the way is a second farmhouse for your farmer, this time with an island vibe! Like the farm back in Pelican Town, you’ll need to clear some debris first, but once you do, you’ll unlock land you can farm to create an additional revenue stream for yourself.

Unlocking the interior of the Island Farmhouse will cost an additional 20 Golden Walnuts. Inside, you’ll find a full second house, complete with a bed if you’d like to stay the night and wake up on Ginger Island.

Unlike the regular farm, though, the Ginger Island farm in Stardew Valley can grow any crop year-round, regardless of which season it grows in back in the Valley. It’s like a large, outdoor greenhouse in that way!

Crops grown on the Island Farm also won’t be destroyed when the season changes, so you can leave seasonal crops planted and continue growing them. However, you cannot build the usual farm buildings, such as barns, coops, or sheds, on Ginger Island.

Qi’s Walnut Room

Mr. Qi is a mysterious figure who gives out big rewards in the game, and it turns out he likes to take vacations. Located in the very back corner of the beach in Island West is Mr. Qi’s Walnut Room.

Once you have collected a total of 100 Golden Walnuts, the room will open with tons of extra goodies inside, like the advanced challenge shrine, a request board, and so much more. You’ll earn a specific kind of currency for any tasks you complete in here, Qi Gems, which can be spent in the exclusive Qi’s Walnut Room shop.

Birdie’s Shack

Birdie is one of the few NPCs found on Ginger Island. She cannot be given gifts, and you won’t be able to increase your friendship with her. Instead, she will give you a quest called “The Pirate’s Wife” that sees you heading back to chat with the locals in Pelican Town.

Tiger Slime Grove

The Tiger Slime Grove isn’t a separate area; instead, it’s a small bit of land on the left portion of Island West, north of the pond.

Here, Tiger Slimes will spawn. These are strong Slimes, with an HP of 415. After defeating a Tiger Slime, you can have the chance to obtain a variety of regular Slime drops ( Diamonds, Dwarf Scrolls, Sap, Slime, etc.), as well as Ginger Island-specific loot. This includes Mango Saplings, Pineapple Seeds, and Taro Tubers, as well as the Tiger Hat and a Tiger Slime Egg (if you have the Slime Hutch on your farm).

Gourmand Frog Cave

The Gourmand Frog is a giant frog that will reward you with Golden Walnuts if you grow certain crops for him. This frog’s cave is on the upper right-hand portion of the map, but it will only be visible if you restore the farmhouse by paying 20 Golden Walnuts.

Once you’ve done this, he will ask for three items; you can find these below, as well as the corresponding crop.

You will need to complete each step of this questline separately; he will not accept all three at the same time. Thankfully, you can just talk to him again after completing a step if you have the next ingredient in your inventory.

Shipwreck

Below the Island Farm, you can find a shipwreck. On the left side of this wreckage, you will see three small sand circles; following these towards the ship will put you inside!

Here, you will be in a very tiny room that holds one Golden Walnut. Once you grab the walnut, you won’t need to come back here for any other reason other than fishing in the ocean nearby.

Colored Crystals Cave

Just north of the farm, there is a grove where Tiger Slimes appear. Northeast of this, you can find the Colored Crystals. This puzzle is essentially a game of Simon Says, with a reward of three Golden Walnuts. There are five rounds, and failing one will put you back in the first round.

If you mess up too many times, the game will become slower.

Island South

Island South is mainly composed of the initial area that you arrive at when taking the boat to Ginger Island.

Resort Area

A resort area can be built on the island that allows NPCs to take a break from their regular schedules and come lounge on the beach. The NPCs will switch to swimwear and have new dialogue about being on vacation.

The schedule for the resort is fairly random, and any townsperson is liable to appear if the resort is open with their regular schedule for the day will be overridden by this day trip. You can interact with the sign on the bar to close the resort for the following day, if there’s someone you really need to ensure follows their regular schedule.

Pirate Cove

Once the Resort is built, you will be able to gain access to the Pirate Cove, as well as the tide pool area directly outside. This exterior beach has a little star-shaped pool and is home to the the Mermaid music puzzle.

The Pirate Cove itself can be entered through a hidden entrance on the east side of Island Southeast, just east of the star-shaped pool. You can enter at any time to fish in the pool at the southeast of the cove or in the small pools near the entrance. These are the only places where you can catch a Stingray. You can also fish up a Gourmand Statue, which initially appears as a present box when caught.

Pirates visit the cove after 8pm on non-rainy, even-numbered days of the season. If you’re inside the cove before 8pm on a pirate-visit day, you’ll automatically be removed and placed outside the entrance, ending whatever you were doing. You can reenter the cove once the pirates arrive.

While they’re visiting, you can play Darts to earn Golden Walnuts, though there are no additional rewards after winning a game three times.

There’s also a bar where players wearing a Pirate Hat, Eye Patch, Deluxe Pirate Hat, or the Parrot Egg trinket can receive Mead once per day. In Winter, jellyfish similar to those seen at the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies festival may appear in the southernmost pool, but they cannot be caught.

Island North

Lastly, we have Island North. To get here, just head directly north from the beach. This area is quite large and has several notable locations.

The Volcano Dungeon

One of the biggest draws for Ginger Island is the addition of an all-new dungeon. The Volcano Dungeon is a lava-filled wonderland with nine new enemies, a weapon and accessory forge, a shop midway through, and tons of new items to collect.

To progress through the dungeon, you’ll need to solve puzzles and use your watering can to traverse lava. Once you reach the top, you will also gain access to the Volcano Forge, which is used to upgrade gear.

The new entrance to the forge will be near the entrance to the Volcano Dungeon itself, so you don’t have to run the dungeon every time you want a weapon upgrade.

The Dig Site

The dig site is a tropical version of the quarry with a few more quirks. A mushroom cave is located near it, and inside, you will find another new NPC, Dr. Snail. The site can spawn both nodes and mahogany trees each day, making it perfect for farming.

Island Field Office

Once you’ve freed Dr. Snail from the cave, you’ll gain access to his Island Field Office in the tent by the river. Ginger Island is home to tons of fossils for you to dig up, which can then be taken to Dr. Snail and donated. By completing the fossils in their entirety, you can earn rewards such as Golden Walnuts and even an Ostrich Incubator.

Island Trader

By donating ten walnuts, you can unlock the Island Trader. You will also need to have the island farmhouse built for this parrot to appear. Once the Trader is up and running, you can purchase a variety of goods, such as island-themed furniture.

NPCs On Ginger Island

Leo

Leo is the only NPC on Ginger Island that you can form a friendship with and give gifts to. With a high enough friendship, you can also invite him to Pelican Town, where he will take up residence in a treehouse next to Linus’ tent.

Other NPCs

The three other NPCs on Ginger Island that you cannot form friendships with. Instead, they function as vendors or quest NPCs.

Unlike the Dwarf in the Pelican Town mines, you cannot befriend the Volcano Dungeon Dwarf.

The Parrot Express

The Parrot Express is a transportation service offered on the island, with colorful parrots flying you about when you step inside. While exploring, you may have noticed little huts like the one pictured above.

At the Express location that can be found above the Island Farm, you will find a parrot who is requesting ten Golden Walnuts. By paying this bird, the entire transportation system will unlock. You will then be able to visit locations that you have previously discovered.

The Joja Parrot

Added in a later update, you can also find a Golden Joja Parrot up outside the Volcano Dungeon. This bird will offer to find any Golden Walnuts you’re missing for a rather steep fee, so it’s a good idea to save this function for the last few you really can’t find if you use it at all.
