Looking back on his path to the starting quarterback job at Incarnate Word, Emmett Brown can point out a multitude of moments that might have changed his trajectory.
If he had never felt the shock of being subbed out of his starting job at San Jose State, would he still be there, or would other opportunities have been on the horizon?

If he hadn’t torn his ACL last fall, would he have had a longer run at Coastal Carolina, or would he have followed through on his commitment to Abilene Christian in the spring?
If he didn’t start his career under the guidance of former UIW coach Eric Morris at Washington State, would he have been able to pick up the Cardinals offense as quickly as he did this summer?
Despite all the potential pitfalls or course changes, Brown won the No. 1 spot with the Cardinals, set to lead UIW into the 2026 opener against NAIA opponent Oklahoma Panhandle State at 6 p.m. Saturday in Benson Stadium.
“It was awesome. It meant a lot,” Brown said. “There’s been a lot in the journey to get here, and obviously what happened last year. Coming back and being able to go out there and go play football again has been a huge blessing. I’m just trying to appreciate it a little bit more.”

Now entering his fifth season, Brown’s only previous starting opportunity came at San Jose State in 2024. He averaged 322.5 passing yards per game with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions across his first four games while leading the Spartans to a 3-1 start.
But as the offense hit a third-quarter rut against Nevada during the season’s fifth game, offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann replaced Brown with backup Walker Eget. Brown later returned to the game but was subbed out again after two incompletions, and student publication The Spear reported that Brown slammed his helmet into the ground out of frustration as he walked to the sideline.
Brown started the next week and appeared in four more games, but Eget received the bulk of the opportunities the rest of the year.

“I thought I had a lot of success in the first couple weeks, and just some behind-the-scenes things happened,” Brown said. “It just was very random what happened against Nevada. But Coach Stutz made his decision, and from that point, it was more trying to look out best for myself. I kind of saw the writing on the wall.”

Brown transferred to Coastal Carolina and was fighting for the starting job before suffering an ACL tear during the team’s first preseason scrimmage. A coaching change at the end of the season left Brown with an “easy decision” to jump back in the portal, he said.
Unsure of his next landing spot, Brown moved home to California to continue his rehab through the spring. He was announced in February as part of the signing class at Abilene Christian, but he said he never enrolled or spent time on campus, meaning he was still available for UIW to scoop up in June.

“That was just a little weird situation. I don’t want to go too much into what happened over there,” Brown said. “Things just didn’t work out for us, and UIW became a good opportunity, so I ended up jumping on that.”
UIW coach Clint Killough was in the market for a potential starting quarterback deep into the spring. EJ Colson, who started most of 2025, had transferred to UTEP, and journeyman T.J. Finley signed with UIW in January but proved not to be a fit, declaring for the NFL Draft in March.

Brown’s name was still in the portal when Killough began scanning through March and April, and conversations with Morris and Stutzmann gave Killough the impression that Brown would be a strong option.
“We didn’t really dive too much into what happened with the Abilene Christian thing, but again, it kind of just took off,” Killough said. “It was a pretty seamless bit of conversation in what we wanted to do and what we thought he could be in our system.”
Brown’s introduction to the UIW offense was “pretty seamless,” Killough said. San Jose State ran a similar style, and the bones of UIW’s system still match what former Cardinals coach Morris taught Brown as the offensive coordinator at Washington State in 2023.
Brown said he ran through his own “mini spring ball” leading up to preseason camp, aiming to learn the timing with receivers in UIW’s up-tempo attack. Many of the concepts were familiar, but Brown still had to understand new terminology and break some habits from previous systems that did not apply with the Cardinals.

With Killough and new offensive coordinator Justin Bane giving him the latitude to try and fail, Brown said he came away from preseason practices feeling ready to take the reins.
“It’s been awesome to have no judgment,” Brown said. “Go learn it, go fail, go figure it out. And then, usually, that lets you go get better. So, it’s been fast, but it’s been good.”
