Alexandra Eala has well and truly cemented her place among the WTA Tour’s elite group of players.

The Filipina defeated Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the rain-delayed Washington Open final, becoming the first Filipina in tennis history to win a WTA Tour title.

Eala’s ranking has jumped to world number 20 following her efforts in the American capital, and she has also risen to 14th in the WTA Finals race.

Numerous individuals have congratulated Eala on her triumph, including Rafael Nadal and her coach, Joan Bosch.

Eala reflected on her triumph during her post-match media duties, noting the potential major effect this title-winning campaign could have on the rest of her career.

Jessica Pegula was far from the only elite WTA star to fall victim to Eala’s excellence in Washington.

Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng was the first to fall, losing to the Filipina in three sets.

Leylah Fernandez, the 2025 Washington champion and 2021 US Open finalist, was then beaten by Eala in straight sets.

Eala’s dominant form continued in the latter rounds, as she also swept aside Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina in straight sets.

  • First round: defeated Qinwen Zheng 4-6, 6-4, 6-1
  • Second round: defeated Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 7-6
  • Quarter-finals: defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4
  • Semi-finals: defeated Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2
  • Final: defeated Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0

When reflecting on Eala’s campaign in Washington, it is fair to conclude that she did not have the easiest route to the title.

“I think to have this many matches at this very high level, against these very high calibre players, it helps me obviously just gain experience and more court time and that level,” Eala stated during her post-match press conference.

“I think inevitably propelling my progression and the level of my game. If you spend time at that kind of zone, the more time you spend there, I believe the better and more consistent you get.

“All these matches and all these hours are just experience in the bank.”

“I am over the moon, I am super happy,” Eala later added. “Just taking it all in right now, it’s just pure happiness. It has been a crazy 24 hours. I think I have warmed up about a thousand times.

“There has been a lot of unpredictable swings with the weather and I want to thank the tournament for just being so accommodating and helping us through it, arranging this Monday final was really great.

“It was difficult but at the same time it has happened to me a lot, rain delays a lot of times in my life, this is just another one of those, although it was a lot higher stakes.

“But I think I was able to take my time and take those learnings from the first half of the match and do my best to apply them in the second, I think it worked pretty well.”

Eala will now travel north to participate in the next WTA 1000 event: the Canadian Open.

Eala, seeded 25th, has received an automatic bye through to the second round in Toronto.

There, she will play American Alycia Parks.

Parks, who beat Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva in the first round, defeated Eala in their one previous WTA Tour match.

The American roared back from a set down to defeat Eala 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the 2026 Australian Open first round.
