Conor McGregor continues to double down on facing Max Holloway for a third time, and he’s running with the narrative that “Blessed” didn’t want the smoke back in July.
McGregor’s return to the octagon at UFC 329 ended in brutal fashion after he suffered ACL and meniscus injuries. Holloway knew something was wrong with his opponent early in the fight, and he pointed it out to referee Mike Beltran. The bout was called off just past the one-minute mark.
During the post-fight presser for BKFC Glasgow, McGregor told reporters that he is still eyeing a trilogy fight with Holloway. He also criticized “Blessed” for pointing out his injury during their rematch and claimed his old foe never wanted to throw leather (via MMAFighting).
“It has to be Holloway,” McGregor said. “Just do the f*cking thing again. Just do the thing again. The guy didn’t engage once. He’s the one that called for the stoppage in the fight. He said ‘ref, ref!’ He’s the one stopping the fight. Imagine I just said ‘yay!’ and jumped the fence. I won! He doesn’t want to f*cking fight.
“On the one leg, he wasn’t coming near me. So shocking and so heartbreaking to me and I’m still f*cking dealing with it. It has to be Holloway. Just f*cking dust it off, re-do it.”
McGregor noted that if Holloway happens to be unavailable by the time he’s ready to return, then he doesn’t want a low-quality opponent. The “Notorious” one said he doesn’t want fighters with no name to call him out because they will simply be ignored.
Holloway has not been booked for another fight since the short-lived rematch with McGregor. Whether or not he’ll get another fight before McGregor is cleared for action again remains to be seen.
